I doubt it'll happen to these engines. OTOH the Crawford Eco Block is an attempt to do basically the same thing. If it works as claimed, it increases emissions and is illegal.

I wouldn't be surprised if every manufacturer had some form of this on their vehicles.

Keep in mind that GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) vehicles are purposefully "de-tuned" in potential power to reduce C02 emissions, but as a result they spew N0x on an elevated rate due to their ability to run extremely lean mixtures. N0x in high concentrations is almost as bad as C02. The governments just don't care about N0x right now because C02 is the "in" greenhouse gas at the moment.

Also remember those scandals about mpg fixing to get better ratings on the window stickers and from the EPA a few years back that Kia and Hyundai got hit with? They aren't the only ones manipulating the system for "better numbers." This is a For-Profit industry, they'll take as many miles as they can get when given an inch, even Toyota isn't immune to that.

VW is not the first, they wont be the last. Honda got hit with fines for disabling misfire recognition, Ford got hit with a fine for some type of emissions defeat device on the Econoline vans, Kia and Hyndai got hit with huge fines for their fraudulant MPG claims.

I'm clueless about diesels. What emission controls were deactivated exactly? Was it simply changing around AFRs or what?

Does anyone here frequent any VW boards? Surely the enthusiasts who are hardcore into tuning these things caught on to the ECU disabling the emission control devices?

EGR, exhaust filters, how the turbo vanes are controlled, injector control, could even be transmission shifting.
