Sheared Rear sway bar bolts

I recently tracked down a new rattle to a rear sway bar shackle... one of the bolts had fallen out and the bracket was jingling around back there. A few months back I swapped in energy suspension poly bushings while installing new shocked and springs so I figure I must have missed that bolt when torquing everything down.

I ordered (4) new bolts from Toyota, but when trying to get them to the 42ftlbs spec, they were snapping off. Looks like the bolts bottom out before you get there.

Anybody else seen this? Do I have the wrong torque spec? Could it be Something is worn out with the mounting brackets that is letting the bolts bottom out prematurely?

To clarify, we are talking about the bolts that hold the sway bar to the axle... here’s what Toyota sold me: 91611-g0816

That should be a 12mm headed bolt. No way it can sustain a 42 lb-ft torque spec. More like 10 is what I would expect.

Close. The bushing bracket bolt spec is 14 ft-lbs, along with the end link top nut. The end link nut at the bottom is 51 ft-lbs (seems high?).

Basically, those 12mm head bolts/nuts should be just above snug with a 12" ratchet.

Not only will those bolts break they rot off too on those brackets and those sway bar end links. I had quite of few end links rust off and need replaced too. :-(
