Shifter repair.

So I aqquired my '89 4runner, and the shifter felt waaay to loose and floppy, so I ordered the bushing set for the upper and lower. Went to change them out and I believe I have a W56 trans! the shifter is held in with 4 screws instead of the twist lock. My question is about the assmebly that bolts it down. The little metal dome piece under the 4-bolt cap and the the cap itself are quite worn to the point of the dome pops through the cap occasionally and then my shifter is back to feeling crappy until i fix it. Anyone know where I can find this piece? Or what its called? Or something? I am a machinist but I have one helluva time trying to get around to any of my own stuff..... HELP!!!

Awww c'mon guys lol. I really love how nice and firm the shift pattern is with the new bushings, until that dome pops through and releases the tension on the spring. Then Ive gotta finish my drive with it all floppy and wondering where the next gear is.

I have a short throw shifter kit from MC for my r-series tranny. I shift like boss.

Are the nipples busted off? Pretty sure that's what's holds all that together

Mines not a R series, W56-B trans. And no twist lock nipples to wear or break. Just some stamped sheet metal plate to hold the spring down with 4 screws.

I'll check there for sure. The closest Ive found is if I order a MC short throw kit but that is as much as the 1600# SD clutch I need first.

Wow 107 bucks for the whole assembly? I just need the 4 bolt plate and curved washer? I dont need an entire shift setup....

Thats where the entire assembly is 107 dollars. I dont need a new handle. I'll probably just punch out my own retainer plate and washer at work this week if I can get time.

Not in Florida worth a damn any more. The whole EPA/wetlands preservation thing is making junkyards hard to get to. Probably be cheaper to buy the new assembly too, after all the fees junkyards have to pay here they aint so cheap anymore. All my favorite motorcycle junkyards are getting scraped up and hauled away too.

Im back to lokking for the assembly again. Is there another shifter setup I can use on the W-56 trans? Been trying to read but I seem to be the only person whos metal 4 bolt retainer has crapped out. Its impossible to shift smooth or find neutral when the little dome pops through the cap.

Try car-part.com for used stuff if local junkyards are scarce.

And did you try calling the guys at Marlin? They're pretty friendly on the phone.
