Shifting slowly getting worse

Hey folks, got a 98 5spd with locker. Have had it since January, have put about 20k miles on it. Over the summer the shifting started getting sticky. Tough to shift, easier to miss shifts than it should be. I replaced the trans fluid with the Red Line everyone here loves so much, and it got a little better, but now it's getting worse again. Feeling very rough to get into gear, sometimes have to push harder than I'm ok with to get it in gear, especially in lower gears. It almost feels like I have to time shifts like you would doing clutchless shifting on a motorcycle. Either that or push the clutch, wait a few seconds, and then shift really slow and careful. What is going on here?

i have 98 5 speed.

i have felt mine start down that same path. bit notchy and much better when i time my shifts to sync proper.

believe it's the pilot bearing. clutch feels okay, but i hear occasional squeal when input shaft is not moving (in gear, clutch in, idling). go to neutral clutch out, squeal stops.

for me, too bad bearing is going before clutch. prepared to do the whole job.

Did you check the condition of and/or replace the shifter bushings? They're cheap parts that are easy to replace, and they do wear out. Toyota shifter bushings are fine, but many push the Marlin Crawler bushings.
I had similar problems with a W56 trans on a Toyota 4WD truck once, but that turned out to be damage to the trans input shaft caused by crappy clutch parts...possibly including the pilot bearing... installed by the PO. Trans shop replaced the input shaft and all was perfect again.

I did not. But I'll check them out.

oy. that's not what I wanted to hear. bummer

With those symptoms, you should be excited it could be as simple as a pilot bearing!
I did a manual swap in my ‘01 in May ‘17. I used a new Aisin clutch kit, which included new Japanese TO and pilot bearings.
Mine has been getting tougher to shift too.
Mine definitely isn’t a pilot bearing. I’m not sure what can wear in a manual to cause harder shifts, but I am assuming it would be synchros or shift forks.

have you checked your master and slave cylinders for leaks? Is the resivour full? slave leak is usually external but master is often internal. Have a friend push the clutch in and see if you can see the slave cylinder pushing the fork.

I replaced the bushing/cushion, but arguably, it has gotten worse. Might be the brand I installed, but I have trouble in side-to-side shifting.

I am about to replace my master/slave to see if the clutch isn't disengaging as far. I know my free play is next to nil, so I'm hoping that improves the clutch feel, but I know that does nothing for actual shifter feel.

it would be lovely if it was just the clutch system pressure.

Thats rhe first thing I'd check but a degrading throw out bearing it broken springs in the pressure plate wouldn't surprise me. If u gotta pull the tranny make sure you replace everything in the bell housing ex. Fork bit check and make sure it ain't bent. Worst case is internal in the tranny.
