I have a 99 4runner 2wd daily driver. I'm looking for some shocks to replace my old shocks. Looking for something similar to the stock ride. Anything better than stock? If not, I will go and get stock shocks.
KYB shocks
what model number?
Idk, but the parts store will know. I think we got the ones for my dads runner at O'Reilly's.
how is the ride on them? are they stiff and can they absorb bumps on the road well?
As far as road manners go they are great, so yes they do as advertised, definitely not harsh like an offroad shock.
Plus one on the KYB. Our go to for better than stock ride here at the dealer.
someone should make a sticky thread about what shocks and springs actually do.
the shock has a few jobs, firstly it stiffens up when you hit a bump so the wheels dont fly up and loose grip, momentarily altering the percieved spring rate. secondly it absorbs energy after you hit the bump to stop the vehicle suspension from oscilating. the shocks can also help smooth out jerky motions in the car.
basically they absorb energy.
often times on a high mileage vehicle, the springs will have sagged, the shocks might be fine, but you could be hitting the bump stops.
What should I change out then? driving over speed bumps and down my drive way is uncomfortable. My car wil just bounch up and down hard. On the freeway if there are pot holes or grooves the ride is terrible.
Whatever you decide, please let us know how they work out. Mine rides rough too, at 236,000 I'm sure I need to replace mine also. My rear end sags a bit too and would like more lift. I've looked at new shocks/coils for front and rear and looks like about $400 and would hate to spend that and have the same ride as before. I don't have that right now anyway so I'm riding rough for a while longer.
Thanks
stock OEM shocks are around $500 and I am scared to spend that money and find out that it's not the shocks but at this point I need to start somewhere. My wife is pregnant with twins and she can't stand the ride. It's my daily driver and now with twins on the way I need to figure something out.
My brother works at Orielly's and he can get a discount. I was planning to get springs there and oem shocks from Toyota. Lets hope it's a better ride.
Rear OEM shocks are dirt cheap. Front struts are not. Here is what I would do if I did it all again:
OEM shocks in the rear: $31 each - 1999 Toyota 4Runner Parts - Toyota Part Sales of Toyota of Dallas
Then KYB Struts in the front. Either the stock ones or the gas-a-just (if you go with gas-a-just, don't change the coils). Then take your pick of rear coils from Rockauto.com (except for MOOG). Should not cost you more than $200. It won't be the best setup ever but definitely smoother than the setup you have now.
Basically if you have stiff (new) coils, you want soft shocks. If stiff shocks, soft (or old) coils.
