Should I be worried? Missing lug nut.

I had an oil change done by the dealer yesterday. While waiting, the service consultant told me I needed new brakes. I only requested the oil change, but would the service tech take off my wheel to check the brakes or would they just look from through the wheel? I have now just noticed I'm missing a lug nut on my front passenger wheel. I don't want to accuse anyone of any wrong doing because I'm not sure if it had just fallen off but I can't see a lug just falling off like that. I drove about 35 miles since the service. I have another lug to put on but I'm just worried about how safe it is to drive without one. I think I'm fine to drive back to my place to grab another lug.

Who the hell knows if they took your wheel off- maybe... You will be fine driving carefully with 1 lug off - BUT I would definitely check ALL your lug nuts (all 23) to make sure they are tight. You may just have a wheel with all the lug nuts loose. Good luck
 
It will be ok if you don't do any crazy driving. Just check and make sure the others are tight. If they are then you could expect it was the dealer that made the mistake. I would take a pic of the missing one and go down there to talk with someone. Forgetting lug nuts is a safety issue, maybe they will offer some free service to you for the mistake.
 
Check the remaining nuts with your wheel wrench to make sure they are tight then proceed home and replace the missing nut.

These nuts should be torqued to about 85 ft./lbs. I think the manual calls for 83 ft/lbs but memory is foggy.

Regardless, that's a healthy "snug" from your wheel wrench.
Your looking for really loose nuts.

Many, dare i say most, dealers include a tire rotation with the oil change. That is could explain them removing the wheels, also giving them opportunity to inspect the brakes. Their losing a lug nut is shoddy work for certain.

Call them and tell them of the missing nut. They will likely replace it. Maybe even throw in a free oil change if you express your concern.

I specifically said oil change only. I didn't think anything of it until tonight when I noticed it. I'll be looking for compensation. I had already left a message and will be calling again on Monday. They are aftermarket wheels and lug nuts as well. I am pretty sure I have some extras…I hope I do. This is the second time I've had an issue at a dealer. The first time was when the service tech scratched the shit out of every lug hole on my 1 day old new wheels at the time. I got four oil changes and tire rotations out of that one.

I can dig it. I don't let anyone take my wheels off for that very reason.

Any update on what the dealer said? You may have to go down there personally. I've had bad luck getting a dealer to call me back.
Didn't realize you had aftermarket wheels and lugs. I would really be upset then.

I hate when shops go looking around your car trying to find more work/parts for you to pay for. I'm like, I drive a 14+ year old car, do you think I'm loaded with extra cash just lying around?
 
That's why I don't let anyone else work on my 4Runner :D

Hopefully you get it sorted, I'd chew the shit out of them for that.

Well I went back to ask how they checked the brakes after I had explained what I saw after I left the dealer. The assistant service manager asked the tech who worked on my truck and said "he forgot" to write it down on the service sheet that my lug nut was missing. It may have fallen off somewhere but I am not 100% as I did not look at my wheels before dropping it off. It may have, it may not have. :shrug: At least I have a bunch of extras.

Telling you your lug nut was missing when you brought it in for service still does not answer the question of how did they check the brakes, lol. I dunno what to say man, but these are exactly the reasons why I more than willingly opted to not use my 2 years of "free" Toyota care :(
