Should I buy this 97?

Hey guys, looking to join this forum soon with my second 4runner (My dad used to have a 97 that I loved). I've been searching the area for 4runners but it's been tough due to my budget. I came across a Black 97 4runner on Craigslist in my budget so I figured I would go check it out. It's a 4Cyl 2WD.

Flaws:
Paint has some scuffs and LIGHT scrapes from like branches I'm guessing

Engine is loud when going due to the 4cyl trying to run the suv

Something is up with the radio antenna because when you try to turn it on it makes the noise but won't come out



Other than those things it's great. She's a real beauty and has 136k miles. Price is at 4500 right now but I'm looking to talk him down due to tires and things like that. Would you guys buy this? (Keep in mind I'm on a tight budget) Just gimme your thoughts and such!

Keep looking. You can find a 6 cylinder for that money.

So you say avoid the 4cyl? Wouldn't be off-roading or anything like that.

I think you'll be a lot happier with the 6 cylinder regardless of how you use it. The 3.4's power is okay at best, I wouldn't drive one with a 4 banger. Not saying it's a bad motor, just under powered for a 4Runner.

Yea wait and keep looking. Don't know what area your in, but I picked up a 98 limited almost fully loaded for that price.

I paid $2800 for my '97 Limited. $5000 for my '99 Highlander.

I would pass on any 2wd not to mention the 4cyl. The MPG for the 6 are pretty comparable and the extra power is well needed. I don't know your location but a 2wd drive here in CO is pretty worthless.

I'd pass and keep looking.

3.4 FTW! You'll find one, they're everywhere. I got my Limited 4x4 for $2500 last year.

Don't know where you live, but it really dictates the price. Here in San Diego, that price sounds about right to a little high for a 2wd 4-banger. I would expect to pay around 3,500 to 4,000 depending on condition here.

But if you're in the South, where they might not be in quite of a demand, you'd get them way cheaper.

No love for the 2.7l 4-banger. I have had mine for a year. It doesn't win any drag races, but neither will the V6. It is easy to work on, lots of room. The worst mileage I have gotten is 17.5, towing. Median is 22.77. There is no timing belt to change, ever. I need extra traction 5 times a year. I have a set of chains I can put on in a few minutes. The rest of the time I get to enjoy going farther between fill ups. And the 4 cyl costs less to buy.

I love my 2.7 , its plenty unless your realy serious into wheelin.

as far as the 4x2, thats a deal breaker unlesss you live in FL....

find a 4x4

I paid way too much for my 4 cyl 2wd but I was looking for that particular model for a particular reason. Anyway 5 speed makes up for the power loss. I also have other junk to drive although I feel its not any less power than my previous V6 2wd model I had.
