Should I do it?

But it's just one man's opinion. You are the one who will be driving it and know what you need from it. Pick what best suits you.

[Edit: incorrect information deleted - thanks salong]

I'm assuming the 2011 Trail is close to being paid off, if not fully yours already. Taking this deal will add $15,000 to your debt load and extend payments for a few more years. Is the new color and fancy grill worth it? Can your finances handle it? It's amazing what the lack of a car payment will do to your monthly budget.

And finally, what did you pay for the Trail to start with? Take that value, subtract the offer, and figure out what it cost you per month. Then using the same value and mileage, figure out the cost per mile. Toyota 4Runners hold their value very well, especially with low mileage, so the offer may not be as great as you think. The dealer's going to wash/wax/vacuum it and list it for $33k or more.

Looking purely financially, it's probably a bad choice. You've got a perfectly sound vehicle with 200,000 miles left to give on which you've already taken the "drive off the lot" value hit and it's only five years old. In five more years, the value of the 5-yr-old 2016 TRDP will be more than the value of the 10-yr-old 2011 SR5, but will it be $15,000 more? As the owner of an older Land Cruiser you should know all this.

But it boils down to personal choice and ability. If your family income can handle it, and you want it, then go for it.

You mean to tell me you didn't do the deal on the spot?? Talk about self control, I would be posting a very different thread if I were in your shoes showing off my new TRDP...

I say do it and don't look back! If you don't, pass along the dibs to another member!

What is the mileage on your 2011?

For the $15K difference you could build the crap out of your current ride and throw in a nice paint job to make it any color you want!

You will miss the KDSS!

Another big difference is the lack of a rear locker and crawl control on the TRDP... do you go off-road much?

I'm assuming the 2011 SR5 is close to being paid off, if not fully yours already.

The TRDP has a rear locker and crawl control. Also, the OP is driving a 2011 Trail, not an SR5.

Other than that I agree with the budget principles.

If you want it, its one of the best deals you could hope for on that vehicle, and IIRC The TRDPro does have a rear locker and crawl control just not KDSS and Sunroof. If you don't want it, you still have an awesome vehicle and less car payments down the road.

You can't really go wrong with either choice, and no one knows your financial's better then you.

I don't think "Sand color" is worth the $12k-$15k you're going to be spending to step into that new 4runner.

If your current 4runner works just fine, I say keep it, but if "sand color" is really your thing, do what makes you happy.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your current 2011 4runner is valued at ~$28k. If you decide to go forward with this purchase, that's roughly where you're new 4runner is going to be valued at in 2-3 years' time. You're really going to eat it in terms of depreciation, especially if a new generation comes out.

This guy is the voice of reason... Did my wife call you and tell you to say this????

I could swing it financially and probably wouldn't have to miss any meals but its probably not the best choice. I do love the KDSS, the JBL stereo, the moon roof, larger nav screen, wtc. that I have in my current 2011 trail.

I probably will not move forward with the deal unless i could get them down a bit on MSRP which probably will not happen. I am 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, this isn't really 4Runner country so unless they get an enthusiast like you and me or an out of state buyer i do not expect the truck to move and they will be in touch with me.

Thanks all!

It seems like it could work out to be a reasonable deal for what it is.

If you figure you got your cost of ownership down to 1500$ a year for the old 4runner I would say you did very well......that's starting to get real frugal unless you buy cheaper/low end cars , buy used, or run things for 15-20 years.

Normally trading up does not make sense, but with 4runner resale values I think the argument could be made if you really like this one while mechanically its essentially the same vehicle from aesthetics I think the refresh models looks night and day difference (interior mainly)

Give it serious thought

Another option if I was in your shoes I would see what they will come down on a TEP or similar model(even if they have to order it) and then compare what the cost of getting the TRD pro is and if the wheels, grill, shifter etc are worth the extra cost to you

Or keep the same 4runner, enjoy no payments and drive the wheels off

I think you just answered your question, if you don't think its the best way to spend your hard earned money I would wait and trust your "instinct".

Enjoy the current 4runner, its 98.93586% identical to the new ones and after 5 years just broken in

All pros have a locker and crawl... They are simply trail editions with a small lift + shocks and some other cosmetics.... KDSS is not necessarily better to have... It may drive a little better on the road with it, but you are driving a big heavy inefficient under powered pig to start with.....

I'm trying to avoid my dealer's lot so I don't get in this dilemma until I see the 6th gen.
Can you ask them to delete the running boards and take 1k off?

bjohnston115,

Only you can determine your financials...
your needs and wants.

If you are leaning towards making that deal, as stated, tell them you need more for your trade...that offsets the TRD MSRP, and more decreases decreased taxed taxes, most of the time, also.....

the test drive....... take it for several hours to "get the feel" for the truck, NOT around the neighborhood!

My FJ, I took it for the weekend
My 4Runner, I took it for 8 hours!
BTW, no salesmen on the test drive.

SR5 was a typo, but I really thought only the Trail models had Crawl and an E-Locker. Fixed, and thanks!
