I was just about done with my 4th instrument panel light swap in the last month (learning each time about polarized LEDs, dielectric grease to keep the instrument lights from flickering out..etc.0
Was super happy with everything..but no..i had *ONE MORE* light to swap..the 'bright" LED in my rear cargo light to an "even brighter" LED i had just bought.
Seriously, my entire car was back together and wiped clean and I had an extra light so I thought 'what the heck'.
So I pop the cover off..pop the old LED light out..start trying to work the new one in (i guess its 32mm instead of 31 or whatever because its a little too tight to go on)..and poof it shoots off inside the light housing.
Ok, whatever I say to myself. I wander around the car back to my tool cabinet and fetch a nice phillips head to take the whole assembly off.
Guess what? As I'm walking back around to the rear of my 4Runner I see smoke POURING out of the fixture..burning electronics..the whole nine yards.
WTF!? So I quickly unscrew the stupid housing amid popping sounds..and when I pull it out..there's the stupid LED light..it landed perfectly on top of the circuits and melted into the metal. Multiple LED lights were scattered around like electronic popcorn.
So I pulled the molten lightbulb off the circuits and attempted to plug in a good old incadescent. no go.
So I pulled the harness off (it kinda snapped off..one plug was glued..maybe that happened when the bulb fused to it?
So what the are odds I could make such a huge mess out of a simple lightbulb swap.
I guess I'm hitting up salvage yards at lunch today looking for a new rear cargo light assembly.
