Should I sell my 4runner??

Hey everyone, been awhile since I’ve been on here. I hope you’ve all been doing well! I’ve been a 4runner owner since 2005 and I never thought I’d say this but I’ve been debating if I should sell/trade in my 2016 trail premium 4runner lately. Crazy right?!

I guess what planted this Idea in my head was I rode in a Tesla for the first time last week. I couldn’t believe how quick it was and my friend raved about how he saves so much money on gas. It didn’t help that I spent $90 that day to fill up regular unleaded.

Fast forward to now and I was looking at the new Rav4 hybrid. I know, it feels like a downgrade right? But realistically as I’ve gotten older, I don’t hit the trails hard anymore and I live in the city of San Francisco where parking sucks for larger cars and there’s lots of hills and traffic so gas mileage suffers too.

I love my 4runner. The size, the height, being able to haul stuff and hit trails to go camping or whatever. Not to mention the amazing looks!

Am I crazy to consider swapping out for the smaller RAV4? It does have some cool new features that my 4runner doesn’t have, but it’s missing a lot too.

What are all of your thoughts?

Hey man, as a brand new owner of a 2019 TRD Off Road, I totally get where you're coming from in terms of gas (coming from a Corolla myself)

BUT....IF your Runner is paid for, and that gas is all you're paying for, the cost for gas will never be as high as a car payment....

Chances are you WILL have to fork out cash for the Rav4 Hybrid and before you catch up the cost of the new vehicle with your "fuel savings", it WILL be a while...

You are actually being rational.

The 4runner is less practical than a RAV4 for most people on this forum.

To me,the 4runner is more of a want than need since I love the appearance and appreciate the capabilities of the vehicle.
Do I really need it? No. I only drive 11 miles everyday and I off road(Exploring trails in the mountains) every 6 months and I’m probably better off with a highlander hybrid or RX350.

Do what fits you best while you can! You never know when you might get to a place in life where it's not even an option! I'd at least wait until the 2020 Bronco finally comes out though...

Tesla S is a quick, sexy ride ... I wouldn’t want one as my only vehicle though. Get in an accident and be ready for considerable downtime waiting for parts.

RAV4 just doesn’t do it for me in appearance and ruggedness, but you could store a fair amount and mileage is nice.

Nice looking 4Runner. I’d roll w/ it.

I'm not considering a Tesla. I still want an SUV/CUV or truck of some sort. I'm too use to riding higher up and I still need to be able to pack a bunch of stuff in my vehicle for work and for recreation.

I am thinking rationally aren't I? It sucks haha.

I definitely know what you mean about making up the cost difference. My thinking is the sale of my 4runner would hopefully cover most if not all of the cost to purchase a rav4. So it would be close (fingers crossed) to an even swap minus taxes.

I guess what is appealing about the Rav4 is the 35-40mpg compared to my current 13mpg, as well as some slightly more modern creature comforts such as Apple Carplay, the automatic trunk door, dual climate control etc. The downside obviously smaller size( a plus for parking in the city), less off road capable, less coolness factor if this is even a thing.

New RAV4 Hybrid is a nice vehicle. I was getting service at my Toyota dealer today and was looking at one in the showroom. Not to small, nice equipment and mileage rated at 40 mpg city. $90 fill ups make you think, I live in Texas and filled up my 4Runner today for $42. Go drive the RAV4 Hybrid and see how you like it. You can always come back to 4Runner when 6 Gen comes out in 2023 ��.

Rental car is an option. Either paid for by your insurance if you're at fault, or the other driver's if you're not at fault.

I came from an 03 4Runner and an 06 Tundra, thinking just like the OP that I was going to buy a 19 Rav4 for the same reasons. I test drove one, and despite it having bells and whistles missing on the T4R, I couldn't pull the trigger. Nothing wrong with it at all, it just reminded me of every other vanilla compact Xover I rent on business trips and I would miss the offroad excursions. A 19 4Runner went home with me. All that said, the OP is the only one who knows what's right for him.

I could be wrong, but seems the 19 and 18 rav4 are pretty different. Yes I test drove the hybrid XSE yesterday. It didn't blow me away or anything like that but it drove solid. Decent enough handling, but it definitely felt more like a car than a truck. Maybe a mild lift and some beefier tires would spice things up a bit :lmao:

I'm just looking for other's feedback and opinions. Always good to hear some input from a different perspective.

wow only $42? That's a really big difference. An ideal situation is a hybrid or turbo diesel 4runner. Toyota is slacking!

I have a 98' that gets about a combined 18mpg and a prius that basically gets 50. Before I bought the prius I did the numbers.
If I drive the prius 100k miles I save about $9k over the 4runner. I drive nearly 30k a year. The prius will pay for itself in 150k miles, but I got it used.

However, I sure like driving my 4runner a lot more than the prius. If I was only driving it 10k a year, it would never have been worth buying the prius, I will pay $900 a year for the enjoyment of driving the 4runner.

You would actually save a bit more money than I do, you would save about $100 a month if you average 10k a year.

So there are some numbers to ponder over, please check them if you wish, as it is late and I am tired.

I applaud anyone who is practical. I've had my 4Runner for 28 months have put 84K miles on it. Break that up, I'm doing 3K miles/month and 36K annually. Based on my miles, I should own a Prius or any other Toyota/Lexus hybrid. I know that I like the utility and cargo space of the 4Runner and know that I can use comfortably all year round here in the Mid-Atlantic (or anywhere else I'm driving). Definitely pay a nice bill for gas but I didn't see myself getting another vehicle and can't see myself in another vehicle anytime soon! The good thing is that there are plenty of reliable vehicles that work for you underneath the Toyota umbrella. I really like the RX350h. The new RAV4 looks nice also.

I'm a Model X Performance owner. Its a different animal. Two completely different cars so if its about which of 2 very different vehicles you prefer. If you have your eyes on a Tesla, a 4Runner won't fill your want. Drive it. I am sure it will be an easy decision after.

Yes. If your even considering it... you don’t need a 4runner. What’s the point of a gas guzzler that is slow if your not using it for its intended purpose?
