Should pinion be sticking out this far??

Just changed my gears to 5.29, did it myself and everything feels and looks good but i noticed that the pinion nut went in pretty deep when i tightened it to spec and now it sticks out a bit further then my factory one did. Is this normal? if not what did i do wrong? will my drive shaft still fit?

That does seem a bit excessive to me. Even if you messed up the preload I don't think it should be out anywhere close to that! I'm not familiar with our 3rd members, but I am with other axles. I've regeared axles before, but never saw a pinion stick out like that afterwards. I doubt you'll even be able to bolt the flange on.

What gears/kit did you use? Also did you use a new crush sleeve when you did this.

Used a kit from trail gear and used a brand new crush sleeve, i doubt i messed up the pre load because i didnt even tighten it to factory spec, but its set at about 3lbs pre load, i set it to the same as my front diff which was done at East coast gears. but i did re use everything except the pinion bearing and crush sleeve, but there was nothing wrong with them so i felt there would be no need to change them except the pinion bearing and crush sleeve. other then maybe not being able to bolt the flanges everything looks and feels good

I think i know what the problem is, im pretty sure they sent me a pinion gear for a 1st or 2nd gen 4runner being there website says it only fits a 1st and 2nd gen 4runner :frusty:

It looks a little excessive to me too. Did you install the shim and oil slinger on the pinion? Did you check pinion depth? How was the contact pattern?

Well trail gear doesn't have kits for the third gen as far as I know, so what you got was either for an earlier 4runner or a taco

contact pattern was good, installed new shims but left the old oil slinger in, it doesnt get crushed so i didnt feel it needed to be changed

Well trail gear doesn't have kits for the third gen as far as I know, so what you got was either for an earlier 4runner or a taco

just spoke with them and they said the part they gave me is for a 4cyl 97 rear diff, said i might have an issue if my rear diff is a v6 rear diff, he didnt know if the pinion is longer then a 4cyl rear diff. Does anyone know what the difference is between a 4cyl rear diff and a v6 rear??

is your 4runner a 4cyl??i counted the teeth on my OEM gears and theres 41 teeth on the ring with 10 teeth on the pinion, so its a 4.10 right? does that mean its a V6 diff? Isnt V6 and 4 cylinder the same?
