Yeah, I had the rack custom made to hold the cans and provide tie-downs. It is light weight and does not whistle on the freeway. :thumb3:

That basket you have there has possibilities. I would make sure it is strong enough to support the weight of one or two 5 gallon cans of gas or water. You dont want those to kiss the roof when you hit a dip!

Factory rail make it close, if you use the yakima cross bars it brings the rak up a couple inches, if it flexes that much something is wrong, obviously they use paper stuffed bags in the video, but I'm just posting it to show the height.

while this option does appeal to me, the price of the total package is over $400, and your weight limit is ~130 lbs. I am a little more drawn to the rocky-road rack, it's a beefed up cross bar system that can hold 300 lbs. My main want for a rack is for a kayak and possible gas cans, I can easily attach a kayak rack and gas can mounts to the rocky road rack when needed, and the price is about half that.

If you go the Yakima route, I think you can easily figure out some kind of rubber bumper/bushings to supper any kid of flex in the basket to protect the hood

The shape of the cans makes a difference as well. Notice I use 5 gallon cans that are shorter and wider than the basic "Gerry Can". This makes for a lower center of gravity for the cans, and a wider foot print to distribute the weight over a larger area. And there is left over room for more cans or firewood.

I just found that picture online, I do't know who that belongs to. I did see a shot of it with the tank on and didn't appear to be hitting the roof. Those old trail side rails are a little taller.

I would love a Gobi or a rack from Drabbits (I met Alex and saw his shop, nice work and nice guy), but can't justify the cost at the moment for my use. I like the idea of the Yakima Basketcase if I can load a few things on it and not worry about it hitting the roof. I would love a heavier basket but need the roof clearance. I have the TE Racks.

Just got a Yakima Load Warrior but was not a fan of how the rack's bolts extend past the thumb knob adjustment nuts and poke out above the flat bottom. So I cut about 1.5 inches off of each bolt, ran a 1/4-20 die over the cut threads to clean them up, and used lock nuts instead. This way I can use a wrench to tighten them down instead of my hands.

I think it's discontinued, but you may still be able to find it searching Google or amazon.
