Opened the door of the new 4R the other day and it hit an object and gouged a dime size gouge right through the paint down to the bare metal. I can't justify taking it in and getting the entire door done...always tell my wife that the vehicle is just a tool so she wouldn't go for the vehicle suddenly becoming a fashion statement. Any relatively quick and inexpensive ways to protect and cover up that area so that it doesn't look awful and doesn't start to rust out? The dealer said he had the right touch-up paint... If I go that route, any preparation that would help? Thanks for all info!

touch up won't work.
touch up paint will cover it up but with it t obare metal, it will be very obvious. The paint will not be smooth, will not have the same thickness and layers, will not have the clar coat, etc. You'll see streaks and brush marks, etc.
Cover it up....how about those stick on bullet hole stickers?

depending how bad it is, and if you could live with touch up paint, you could go that route. if you do, i'd recommend you get some primer, touch up paint, and clear coat. i believe they sell clear coat in a spray can. remember to sand/wet sand each layer..
though, i'm not sure if you should sand the paint/clear coat layers..
it may be your better option as if you have the door repainted, the paint quality may not be the same. you'll also probably be able to tell because of all the orange peel if its not done well. non-factory paint jobs typically have more orange peel anyways..
be careful with it though, especially sanding and painting. make sure not to overspray.. probably better to cover up the non-affected areas.
oh and for some reason, i feel like adding a disclaimer, so..
disclaimer: i'm not responsible for any damage done if you choose to go this route..

If you know how to spray paint I suggest getting a can of you color from http://www.expresspaint.com. The also sell clear coat in spray cans. It's not cheap but compared to a body shop it's a huge bargin! About 50 bucks will get you what you need to do a professional looking job. All you need is your paint code (they even show you were to find it)..... I bought their paint to redo the mirror on my 05 Runner (galatic gray).... You simply can't tell it now from the other mirror... I do admit to having done a fair amount of spray painting.
You DON'T sand between clear coats... The key is preping the area to be sprayed... You have to wet sand with like 6000 or 4000 grit and get the chipped spot to blend in or be smooth with the rest of the surrounding paint. If there is a depression it will show no matter how well you spray it. If you don't feel comfortable doing this maybe you can find an experienced auto painter to do the job on the side... using your paint and clear coat.
It would still be a hell of lot cheaper than what a body shop is going to charge! Those guys are higyway robbery on the sidewalk... You should have enough paint to play around with it before you do the real deal. It's not difficult once you get the hang of it.... good luck...
