I just got a Yakima fat cat and it’s easy to install and remove. You need to use the tilt if you want to get 4 boards on at s time
 
I use this because it doesn’t effect gas mileage.

Meh. Just bring your own lunch instead of dropping $15 on a burger and don't worry about it! ;)

If I'm by myself or with just one or two others my gear just goes in the back. My box is only if i have a full vehicle. I just throw my stuff in the back - i fail to see the point of a case for my skis insise the truck (clothing is an entirely different matter - that stuff stays hyper organized in a special duffel).
 
Skybox 12 here

I run a Yakima skybox 12 on Thule square crossbars. I think if I tried to use the stock crossbars the clamping system might contact my roof. Winter is here and I swapped over to my snow tires so k can't really say if it's had much effect o mileage.

I can fit 4 pairs of skis in the bag, our gear in the back and 3 passengers plus myself. Fail to how you don’t get the point. :cheers:
 
I have used the Yakima FatCat ski rack for the past 2-3 years, and I like it a lot. They worked with the factory rack as well. I am looking put it to use this coming week!

What rack do you have? Can you show a photo from above so I can see how you have attached the fat cats to it? I have been trying to figure out how to do the fat cats on an aftermarket rack without attaching a second crossbar.
 
I use yakima fat cat (one set) on both my 4runners. They are silent as can be up there even with the levers popped up for extra binding room. Inspiringly enough I don't have a pic of them on my 5th gen and they are mounted on my 3ed gen now.
 
Go with a ski/cargo carrier!

I found a nice ski carrier on CL. Always have stuff in it. I carry skis, a surfboard, camping gear, a beach chair, tire iron, jumper cables and flares, tools, extension cord, work light, well, you get the idea. It is all clean, dry and up and out of the way! Keep you skis or board clean and cold, and your boots warm!

I had yakima rail grabs with 48" round bars that I used to fit a Yakima 12 and then a 21 skybox. Road salt in the North East sucks and its not work damaging your gear.

Do not try to use a skybox with the stock roof rails, you will scratch the hell out of your roof and rust will be an issue.

Also, no matter how far forward I moved the roof boxes, the spoiler would contact them with the hatch up... which is why I went with a full length gobi rack. In hindsight I should have gone with the ranger rather than the stealth... or at least asked for a half inch more clearance for the crossbars as I can barely use them for the skybox.

Are you saying that even after they're closed and latched the mounting clamps hit the roof and rub the paint away? Or they just drag as you're putting it in place?

The stock crossbars Flex way too much. You might be able to get by with a quarter inch of clearance after the box is installed, but the clamps will most certainly hit the roof over any kind of bumps even on the road. Not something I would ever chance...

I found that the stock roof rail system was not functional for my applications, so I upgraded
 
I use the round bar adapters on the cross bars of Gobi rack to mount my OLD Yakima rack. Can easily "roll them" out of the way when not in use.
 
Yakima Skybox 16 but, I added the Yakima towers and crossbars to clear the antenna in back
