Qualifier: I haven't taken delivery of my TRDORP just yet so I have a lot of intentions that I'm not sure will work but am anxious to tinker. My intent is to use my Thermarest Luxury Lite Mesh Cot along with a closed cell foam sleeping pad. It is super low profile and has worked great a week at a time when steelhead fishing. I hope it fits; if not I'll adapt. By the way this setup is dog approved.

In the 4th gen, you can fit a standard cot from Bass Pro, the one that is 75" in length.
I think that is about as large of a cot that will fit in the rear with the tailgate down.

You will need to remove the seat bottom of one side, assume the passenger side is better.
I used a few 2x6's to block up the footwell to level the cot.

Slept at freezing temps recently with a regular summer bag, inside a super cheap and puffy walmart bag. I like the cot because it's compact when broken down, leaves about 16" of clearance under the cot for storage, and with the standard bass pro option, about half of the cargo area is still useable.

I actually traveled with the cot all set up, and could roll up to a parking spot, move the steering wheel out of the way and climb out back and "into bed" without exiting the truck. If you organized the storage well enough, you can sit upright on the cargo area, but not on the cot. Could also use the cot as a "desk" if you're not too tall.

Knock my head?—yes, of course.
But I’m also only 5’7, and can squeeze into the back between the front seats.
Certainly a lay-down-only situation on top of the cot—but it also disassembles in 20 seconds after taking off the two end pieces, so it’s certainly not too much a hassle to take down and give more room if you needed to.
Just note that @75” long, you need to remove the seat bottom and put something in its place for the front supports to level the cot.. also note that I have the double decker shelf still in place, so that loses another 1.5”.

I have a new 4Runner on order and am considering a cross country trek, more than likely sleeping in the back, any pics would be great.

This fits well on the passenger side if you push the seat forward somewhat. It is nice - gives you space underneath for storage, too.

I just throw down a Therm-A-Rest and sleeping bag. It works for me. I am 6 ft tall so I have to bend the knees a little. It really is quite comfortable.

The Gen 4 seats fold down nice and flat.
