Sleeping without a platform

Anybody just fold down the rear seats and sleep on a pad without bruising drawers or a platform?

I've done it a few times, but I wouldn't want to do it regularly... especially at 6'2". You have to sleep diagonally if you are tall.

First week I bought her I went out. I got drunk af with my buddies hence the mess and sacrificed my matt so he could use it as a pillow because idk drunk logic.

So I slept right in the back with the hump and no sleeping bag for most of the night.

Things I noticed about sleeping in the back from experience and research. (I'm 6'5")

1. I'm too tall. My legs where sticking out the back alittle.

2. Take the seat bottoms out before you fold them down. Shove a 8 gal action packer in the foot well with the front seat all the way forward. You gain more than enough space to even put an air mattress.

3. The hump was actually okay that night and I have a bad back. Idk how I didn't wake up wrecked. That being said getting so drunk that it works is probably not preferable by all. My solution will be to just throw a folded iso mat down or something to even up the floor. Eventually I would like to do the Antman storage/sleeping mod.

4. All else fails get wrecked and anything can be a bed.

That's how I do it. The catch is I removed the rear seat bottoms as soon as I got the rig. So it's basically a 2 seater now. It works well for my wife and I because it's just us. Two seats are more then enough.

It's not hard to put the seat bottoms back in but I haven't in 2 years. When car camping, sorry "overlanding", I can easily put it in and roll it towards the front. All other gear goes in behind it. When we get to camp we remove all the other stuff and unfold the memory foam. It's an almost instant bed. It's still got a slight incline with the rear seat bottoms removed but it's not bad with that foam.

Been toying with taking the seat bottoms out semi permently. Are you worried about the upper seat brackets getting bent?

Not in the least. The rear seat back acts like a cushion preventing any major force being applied to the bracket. After many car camping trips my seats backs still fold up and lock whenever needed.

I'm not quite that tall, so it may work well for me.

Haha, I don't I will be getting hammered anytime soon, so I'll have to be stingy with my sleeping pad.

I have a car seat in there unless I am going without the wife and kid overnight, so taking the seam bottoms out wouldn't be my first choice, but I will keep that option in mind.

Good to hear thanks for the insight.

I have heard of folks replacing the 4 hinge bolts with various types of hitch / lynch pins to facilitate easy removal of the seat bottoms. Though, it is still only a few minutes with a ratchet to remove all 8 floor bolts to pull the seat bottoms.

I'm going to cut the seatback hinge in half so I can put one seat back in if need be. The design is stupid how both seats are stuck together.

Here is what the seat bottoms removed with the 8 gal action Packers looks like.

Be interested to see what people's quick release setups for the seat bottoms look like.

Not my picture.

It's not ideal unless you have a way to eliminate the hump between the cargo area and seat backs. I use a couple cut pieces of 1/2" foam.

Taking out the seat bottoms gives you 4" or more room front to back.

I'm thinking about buying a small trailer. I like to sleep in the back but I really hate hauling everything out and putting it in the front seats/under the vehicle/on the roof just to get the sleeping area set up (I have a 2 year old so I have to take a car seat everywhere I go).

Removed the seatbottom semi permanently on my 60 split side.

Debating on getting the 8 gallon action packer or something else [emoji848]. I will get some measurements with the seat all the way forward and go from there I guess.

Side note I'm 6' 5" and I will be able to fit just so with the gate closed (and my boots off [emoji23]).

What 3rd gen is that?

Have not done this yet in the 3rd gen, but in my 4th gen, I took out the seat bottom, leveled out with a stack of 2x4's, and threw in a Bass Pro cot and drove 13 hours after work to a get together in PA.

Worked like a charm, napped somewhere in between at a Walmart, pretty stealthily.
Great sleeping for someone under 6' tall

I sleep in mine without a platform. You can actually sit up then too. I usually take the seat bottoms out for the extra length, but I've done it before with the seat bottoms. There is less length, but if you don't sleep totally straight, and on your side then it's not that bad.
