Slight oil overfill a problem?

Did an oil change over the weekend. Except this time I had some "help". My little nephew wanted to help his uncle (that would be me) by pouring in the new oil for me. While he was very good at not spilling (i.e., using a funnel properly... yay) he filled it back up with all 6 quarts of oil I had given him. Normally I do just 5.5 quarts as this brings the oil to the full line on the dipstick after an oil change. I know large amounts of oil overfill can be a problem. Am I still ok with this amount of overfill? BTW I have the 3.4L V6 engine.

Usually at 5.5 quarts my dip stick still shows that the oil level is below "full"

Is it above the full mark on the stick? If its just barely over I would not worry about it. If you are that concerned then go to the part store and get a hand pump and 2 feet of tubing and just suck out the extra.

a bit over full is fine. You need to start the engine and let it fill the filter before you check the level. Start it, let it run for about 10 seconds, then shut it off. That's when the level should be at the F mark.

my dipstick says full after adding a full six quarts of oil . EVERY 3RD GEN I have owned takes six quarts even though the manual says 5.5. That half a quart won't hurt you anyway.

Same here...6 quarts of oil puts me right on the full mark. I think you'll be more than fine, I wouldn't change anything.

Where is it on the dipstick?
Overfilling increases crankcase pressure and can damage seals, oil control rings, PCV systems, etc. Not good, don't run it that way. One other thing over oiling can do, the crankshaft can aireate the oil, and cause air bubbles in the engine, which in turn can cause bearing damage, the air bubbles take up space in between bearings and no oil means more heat and more friction.

With that said. 1/2 qt or less? probably not an issue.

6 quarts brings the dipstick to the full line as others said. Every oil change I've done required 6 quarts.

Hmmm, I put in one of the "5+" quart jugs in at my last oil change and it filled it right to the middle of the OK range on the dipstick. I can't imagine it could take another 3/4 qt to get to the full line.

And before you ask, I did run the engine first, and I was on a flat surface.

From the add line to the full line it's about one quart.

Thanks for the responses guys. See the picture I took. The red line shows where my oil level is after a refilling with 6 quarts and changing my oil filter. This is after driving around for a few days.
1. Is this amount of overfill ok?

2. How come I'm slightly above the fill line from others who say after 6 quarts they are right at the fill line?

It looks like maybe a 1/4" over the line. I wouldn't worry.

From what I understand, anything between the empty and fill line is fine.
