Slip indicator light comes on - Dangerous Situation

Starting last night and again this morning, on several occasions when travelling normally I hear a beep, the slip indicator light comes on, the car brakes on it's own and it pulls to the left or right. Then it stops beeping and braking and I can drive normally. Obviously this is very dangerous and it jerks me around as it's braking (on it's own)

I did a search and found similar article of someone having the same issue. I'm bringing the truck to the dealer tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has seen this?

Yes, it did give a recommendation. I printed it and will bring it to the dealer tomorrow. I'm just looking for anyone else who may have seen this. Thanks for the response!

First thing I would start with a Zero-Point Calibration, after that's done we can dig in a lil deeper if its still causing issues.

Thank you so much. I'm going to mention it to the dealer. It's just very disappointing. I bought the 4 Runner used with 36,000 and it now has 56,000 miles. It's the 1st Toyota I've ever owned... not too happy so far. Hopefully it will be an honest dealer and wont try to rake me over the coals.

I hope so too, too many dealers seem to care more abvout profits than building a relationship with their returning customers and I believe that's just bad busniess management.

I'm sorry you've been having issues with the vehicle with such low mileage, was it a Certified Used Toyota by any chance?

Unfortunetly, the Zero-point calibration can be thrown off by many factors, even an alignment could cause enough of an issue to set it off. (Our Hunter machine specifically states to relearn Zero-Point Calibration to prevent instances like yours.)

Is it possible for these symptoms to be progressive? Meaning that it could be a little "out" and the system is somewhat more sensitive than it should be. I've lifted my 4Runner twice and have had two alignments done without ever re-zeroing anything. Should I do it just to be sure it's actually zeroed?

To tell you the truth, I didn't program the algorithms so I can't tell you for sure. I know when I did my lift on my 4Runner my VSC was not a happy camper until i relearned the stuff.

I don't know about it being progressive, but I could see it maybe over time getting a little finicky if it hasn't been relearned in a while and you've played with the level of the truck.

Is the Zero Point Calibration able to be done by (non-Toyota) alignment shops and if so would they typically know to do it ?

Is this a typical adjustment needing to be made to most modern vehicles after undergoing suspension/steering changes or adjustments or is this unique to Toyota ?

My guess is that most modern rigs will have similar systems installed as part of the newer safety features common to SUV's today but all may have unique calibration requirements.

Yes, it was a Certified Used and the 1 year warranty ran out in July.

I just heard back from the dealer and they said they found nothing - couldn't recreate the problem and no codes showed up. I asked that they do the calibration regardless and they said they would check it. Hopefully they do something because it wont be fun leaving there knowing they didn't do anything and the truck is acting this way. It's pretty scary and dangerous. It's pouring out here so the roads are slippery and it isn't happening now so that is weird too. You would think if it were going to do it it would do it with the roads wet. Thanks for the help and I will update once I pick up the truck.

I should add that it looks like it will be $109.00 charge and that is what they're calling a diagnosis fee. So that's pretty reasonable.

I've owned the truck for a little over a year and the only time it has acted this way was when I was sliding in the snow. Which I reckon is what it is suppose to do. That was fine with me... when it happens on dry pavement, driving straight and doing 65 miles an hour it's not so cool.

My VSC light was stuck on and the cause was a faulty gas cap. Gas cap replaced light went out.

I have no lights on at all.. just out of the blue the slip indicator light goes on and the brakes lock up as if I'm sliding in snow and it thinks I'm in trouble.

Well, they found nothing. They said they did the zero calibration but it wasn't really off. We will see...

Along the same lines. I read some articles about getting an alignment. I need new tires but the ones the dealer can offer me are too expensive. If I go to a Town Fair tire to get tires do I need to bring the truck to Toyota to get the alignment done? This whole traction control system has got me thinking that the alignment needs to be done by Toyota.
