Lost one of my 2011 4R Limited Smart Key / Inserts on a recent road trip. My local dealer quoted me $250 for the 3button fob, $90 to program, and another $90 for the 'laser cut insert'. Anyone know if this is reasonable or ridiculous? Anyone know any other reputable places to purchase this part?

That is very high. I purchased the extended (but separate) "key warranty" when I bought my limited. It was only like $300 for the 5 year warranty, where I can claim a lost key fob once per year for the five years (5 new fobs in total with a $0 deductible). I have already claimed one and plan on using it each year. The $250 quote for the fob is about right, the $90 to program is high (should be about $50), and the insert key should be about $35. That puts your total at $335-ish. Or you can look to buy a discounted brand new fob off ebay, or here on the forum perhaps :hello:, and just have it programmed by your dealer.

The dealership I purchased from wanted $485.00 I purchased from a different dealership for $285.00 that's with the key and programmed as well

I know that on my wifes nissan they told me to find a fob on ebay with the same fcc id and then they could program it.
I recently lost my 4runner key and plan on doing the same thing with it. I found the the whole keyless remote with a key blank in it on ebay for 39.50. I haven't gotten around to ordering one and testing it out yet.

My past experiences of buying a fob from Ebay have not been good. Two of the three that were purchashed from Ebay (correct fcc id notwithstanding) could not be programmed to work so even though they were cheap, I lost money.

Probably too new. The ones I purchased were for a Camry and Honda.
Short answer, usually no. This is an auto issue, not a Homeowners issue. However, Comprehensive coverage from the auto MAY cover it depending on the situation......

I lost a smart key for my Prius and did some research on it. It seems the Prius smart keys on ebay don't work for people for keyless start, so you still have to put the FOB in the slot to start the vehicle. If you buy one from the dealership, it will work just like your original and start the vehicle while the keyfob is in your pocket.
I paid my local dealership a total of $245. It was $195 for the keyfob and $50 to cut and program the key. The price should be very similar for a 4Runner keyfob. I would suggest calling a few different dealerships to see if you get different quotes. The other thing is you could get the key cut at a local hardware store for less than $5, so I wouldn't pay much more for that at the dealership.
I sure wish I had a keyfob on the Trail Edition, I hate getting my keys out of my pocket!

I am willing to part with my extra (I have three). It is the smartkey only though. You will need to have it re-programmed and also buy the physical key as well and have that laser cut (have your dealership provide you a quote). I will put this in the "for sale / wanted" sticky forum if I need to. Just let me know, or PM for details. :thumb3:

Are there any new experiences / price quotes lately on this issue from my fellow Limited owners?
I am considering getting a spare smart key that I can leave at work or at minimum, a spare key insert (the reverse cut key that works in the driver's door and is inside the smart key) and I'm trying to weigh the price options. So any experience is welcome.
My local Savannah Toyota is quoting $281 for the fob, $104 for the key, and $50 to program. $435 for the whole thing is just a little much to me!

I recently paid over $500 for a 2006 Acura key. Several trips to the dealer to get it programmed properly.

I can't speak to getting the key warranty afterwards, but I do still have a key fob available (has not been used a single time as it just sits in my desk as a backup to the backup). Anyone interested, let me know... :hungry:

Well a quick call to Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota (the guy we all rave about for excellent extended warranty prices) tells me that the key warranty is a dealership to dealership thing and isn't through Toyota in the way that the normal extended warranty is. So much for buying that warranty post-purchase!
