snagged a manual 98

Just picked up a rough 1998 Manual v6 4runner. No locker, lot of cleaning and a bit of rust to work with... =( but price was right.

I'll get some pics up probably Monday, got a busy Weekend ahead of us.
Just wanted to tell somebody...err, everybody!! Didn't know how much fun a manual transmission was in one of these, have always had an auto.

Still have our 97 and 96. =)

96, 97, 98, when you getting the 99, 00, 01 and 02? It's like you have yourself a mini museum.

I love my 5spd, it's even more fun now that I have a locker axle in it, went from 4.10's to 4.30's and it's made a difference, the 31's don't like to stick as much as they used too, going to be really happy yo have them when I junp to 33/34's.

I recommend Marlin Crawlers HD Shifter bushing and seats, really snugs up the stick feel. Also switch over to GL4 Redline 75w-90 in the trans as soon as you can, night and day difference for me. When I picked up mine it would hardly go into 1st and 3rd, but now it just about falls into gear. BUTTER.

haha...think im done with 3rd gens for now. Was browsing for a 1st gen when I came across this one. I'll def look into the shifter bushings and seats..feels pretty good, pedal seems low, but then again I have never driven one so I don't know if that's right or not. If its like my mr2 maybe I can adjust the height.

It has zero service history as far as I can tell, the po had no clue what has or has not been done. It does run well and shifted pretty good and has no lights so maybe I can just start going through it. It def needs vc gaskets and brakes need to be bleed out some more. Other than those two things, just a ton of love and general maintenance, fluids etc. Will try the redline out, its what I've always used in my mr2 trans and had good luck. thanks Troy!!

Also, i couldn't agree more about that redline 75w-90. Made my shifting wayyyy smoother!!

finally got to pull it out from behind my garage for some pics..not bad at first glance, but lots of rust and history underneath...rear dif is patched and so is the rear track bar mount.
Interior needs a deep cleaning and paint is losing is clearcoat in areas. New battery and box of fluids, ftw. haha. Ac compressor in a box =(

its got some pretty shot 265 70 16s on it now and a killer wore out factory stance. =)

too bad we dont have any 3rd gens at the local pull it yard..they had 5 last month!! I'll just sit back and wait for another..not trying to put a bunch of money in this one...throw on some parts I have laying around, etc. Wanna try to source some factory steel wheels too.

yes sir. was listed under "4 runner" out in West Nashville. I'll keep you in mind if I end up needing one...for now i'm just going to piddle around with it since its not a daily or anything. I actually have an axle that I promised to a member in Chattanooga.

Its not leaking, or anything..just looks rough.

I don't know about clean, but def a manual! ha, ripped out the back half of the interior and cleaned the heck out of it this afternoon. Thinking about making it a truck we can take camping and beat on a lil and not worry to much about it.

It was either this or a cbi rear bumper and tire swing out for my daily 4runner. Thought this would be more fun!

got rid of the the interior and beat panels behind the front seats. My gawd talk about some smells..haha. Front is all vacuumed out and gave it a bath. Also aired up the old tires.
Will keep up progress here. Saw a really bad spot in the frame that def needs to be plated, right under the driver side floor board.

smelling good now and feels much cleaner. =)

probaby try to either remove the woodgrain or wait on a doner junkyard truck for new panels...door panels are pretty gross so those will def be replaced.

yes sir! gotta have an old mister on deck. She mostly keeps the dust off my garage floor. Have a ct20b been meaning to put on for months now. keep getting sidetracked somehow!
I noticed that missing cover when I was vacuuming..good eye! prob just run to the help section at advance, think that's where i got my last one.

You're free to have any of the junk i pulled out of the 98. None of its going back in. =) Prob end up at the dump by the end of the week.

Most runners in my area are rusted out and have an absurd amount of miles. You're off to a great start bro!

thanks man! This one is from Minnesota hence all the rust. Still shocks me how bad the snow and salt are on frames. Wife's 96 from Tn still has original stickers underneath.

came across a wrecked 2002 limited at pull a part today. Seats were gone but I got all the rear interior pieces and door panels that were toast in this truck. Got it all back together.
Someone was a little rough on the passenger door panel trying to get who knows what...but was able to make it work.

Didn't know the 2002 had that large side pocket so had to cut a little bit of metal out to fit it in. Sawzall FTW! Its much nicer and cleaner inside now...I left the seat bottoms out to get the full bed layout, had the stained carpet in the trash when I thought I'd try spray painting it for fun...Hey it really does work!! HA, one can of left over yard furniture paint I had laying around.

This is kind of a fun build since its never going to be a daily and just want to take it camping offroad from time to time. More to come!! =)
