So many issues...is this possible?

I've had a 3rd gen and 4th gen with about 600k between the two of them. Both v6. Both sr5s. No issues aside from the usual timing belt (3rd gen) and didn't even get the head gasket issue with my 4th gen.

My wife buys a CPO 5th gen (2016) with about 30k and so far the poor girl has been in the shop twice with issues. I'm pretty embarrassed since I basically guaranteed her it's reliable and she's only had it for 1k miles.

So far,

1) shaking while idling in warm outside temp (>70°)
2) front diff issue (needle pin replacement under warranty planned)
3) rear passenger seat (middle row) does not fold down all the way
4) brakes feel mushy and engage nearly at floor
5) mpg is <= 16 mpg for highway driving
6) heat coming through vents when fan is turned off (with temp on warm)


Anyone else have these issues? She got it at the Toyota in conshohocken outside of philly.

I'm really curious if she got a lemon somehow or if this is where Toyotas have gone.

I think #6 is normal. All of our Toyotas worked this way. You have to select air recycle to close off outside air from blowing in. My BMW does not work that way. If you turn off the fan a little door closes inside which stops all incoming air.

I actually like it the Toyota way.

It's funny you say that because that was my reply as it's what I've done. Select the recirc and all is good. But the dealership told her not to do that but instead turn the temp down to cold.

Didn't make sense to me but I don't have a 5th gen.

This, and #5 is not abnormal necessarily, especially if it’s a 4wd model. My 2017 limited got close to that stock, and if you drive with any bit of a heavy foot the mpg drops quickly.

#5 - I drive pretty varied and get around 19 or 23 on cruise or 19 highway (same aero as a brick)

I've got 91K flawless miles on my '10 Trail which I paid cash for new. Only one TSB about 4 months into my ownership, which was a redesigned propeller shaft replacement. My Trail has been so reliable, that I'm trying to convince my wife to buy a Limited instead of another Volvo Cross Country wagon (so over her Volvos...). #s 1,3 and 4 on your list seem like something is wrong in each situation. #2 I've not experienced, but there is TSB I believe. #6 I have never noticed personally. And as for #5, Ive never paid attention and do not really care. I did not buy my T4R for fuel economy and never expected anything great in regards to MPG.

1) it shouldn't shake while idling
2) normal, and not just 4runners
3) how far does it fold?
4) they should not be like that, the brakes on these are good
5) check your air pressure, less than 16 is low but not crazy low, these have shit mpg. also you need to confirm your mpg at the pump, don't just read the computer.
6) normal, hit recirc to close the outside air vent

did it come with service records?

First, none of these are related. So either it's a confluence of random events, the result of poor maintenance or abuse, or you've got a lemon, or it's nothing. But all of them seem to have simple solutions, except the first.

#2 and #3 are warranty issues at this mileage.

#4, did you check the pads?

I don't see why cant you fold seats flat. There is nothing holding them. Lift seat cushion, Fold headrest, Fold the seatback forward should take care of it.
