So what ATF are you guys running? And drain and fill capacity.

Yes I have searched, until my eyes are rolling back in my head. Vehicle is a 2008 4runner with the 5 speed auto box. Owners manual doesn't say anything of course. Is anything designated WS ok? Amazon has both
Castrol Transmax ATF/CVT Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid, 1 Gallon and
Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle ATF Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

Which appear to meet the WS spec. They ok?

Also, on a basic pull the plug drain and fill, what's the capacity. Not a pull the pan, just pull the plug.

Personally, I would only use Toyota part #00289-ATFWS.

Not sure how much will drain out. 3-4 quarts?

I have an 04 V6, think it's 5 speed and only use OEM. Personally, I would only use OEM. For may drain and fill, my mechanic drains about 3 quarts at a time.

You can save a bit and get Aisin WS trans fluid from RockAuto, which is likely what Toyota OEM is rebranded from.

Aisin WS fluid

My trans flush is due soon and I'm going to go with Valvoline Maxlife this time

I only do drain & fills and catch what comes out, pour it in an old 5-quart oil jug and that's how much I put back in, maybe just a splash more, it's close to 4 quarts as I recall.

I run the cheap Walmart Super Tech ATF Dexron, and I do drain/refill on every oil change. I tow heavily, so i'm on top of my ATF change routine like it's a religion. I'm currently at 450xxx miles and the tranny is super happy. I do the same on my DD car, as well as the landcruiser. Both of those vehicles are over 300k mileage.

Just my opinion of course, but the quality of ATF is not as critical as the frequency of ATF changing. Also, learning how to operate the 5speed tranny manually during critical times is also very important in order to keep the ATF cool, and increasing the longevity of the transmissions. ATF should come out of the pan drain hole pink color, and any shade of darkness from pink is a sign of overheating and/or gone too long w/o changing. I don't know what color Toyota WS fluid is brand new!

I mulled this over and after a lot of reading went with Valvoline Maxlife because I could order it in bulk containers from RockAuto and it's widely compatible with good crowd sourced oil analysis. The act of changing transmission fluid consistently on the service interval matters significantly more than what quality of spec fluid was used. For reference, I have two Nissans with the infamous CVTs that like to fail with 'lifetime fluid'. Shop swore up and down that if the transmissions were touched at all, they would fail after 80k miles of use. Well one was changed and made it another 30k miles to 110k with no issues and actually ran smoother after. The other was just changed at 85k and was missing 2 quarts so the transmission would have been worse off if I had listened to the shop. My 4runner was starting to shudder a year ago and after a fluid drain and fill, went away because it turned out it was time to service the transmission. All you need is whatever fluid meets the spec set by Toyota, at the best price and enough to do the procedure correctly, per the maintenace schedule.
