Hey guys,
took the running boards off my 04 Limited in prep for a set of less-prone-to-damage sliders and now all of the glorious surface rust that is a Northeast Ohio 4Runner is now in plain sight. Next step is to get it blasted to remove the surface crap, painted, and oil coated to combat our awesome road conditions and the salt that will be all over everything, but I digress...

These immediately caught my attention, and I'm not sure what to do about them...I also do not know what they are called. The inside feels decently rusty too, so its not just the outside. Is this something I can purchase and DIY if I have a torch and some welding stuff, or is this for a pro to tackle?

Lower link frame mounts, should be able to chop them off and weld new ones on, some fab sites carry pre cut tabs for that task

I left Ohio in the 80's. I live in rust free Arizona now. My 03 still looks like brand new underneath. Are they so rusty they need replaced or can they be cleaned up and repainted?

They're pretty bad... you can feel on the inside its just flaking away. Figure why take the chance of them giving out when I've got a trailer or am up to my doors in snow... thanks for the quick response, 03l4Runner, off to find the pre fabs!!

You would know best but from what I can see in the pic of the outside that rust doesnt look to be structurally a problem. I would just clean them up as best as you can and decide if the thickness is an actual concern. I'm willing to be they are pretty stout and thick to begin with so if you lose a little steel it wont be a huge deal.

That's a Doohickey thingama-bob holder for the doodle-spleen sporken spiel rod. You can find them under part number D00H1CK13-TH4NG.

Its the lower trailing arm link mount, there are a bunch of options from what I've seen. there are weld-on reinforcement plates, fabbed up replacements (cut & weld on new ones) You probably will not be able to get one from Toyota, but any welding shop or fab shop should have no problem whipping those up for a decent price.

While you're at it, maybe check out the frame at the front end? Those radiator supports aren't all that sturdy and one guy IIRC actually had the tow hooks rust off completely (makes sense since its basically the end plowing through the salt.)

Old ass Adidas shorts from back in the day... otherwise known as the mowing/painting/drywall/running-at-night-please-dont-hit-me/mulching shorts.

The radiator supports don't look as bad, but they definitely have some crustyness to them, and the tow hooks are the same- good project for the spring but they'll both make it through the winter.

To the OP you could weld plates to the sides of original brackets to reinforce. To get away from the problem of cutting and replacing existing. It sounds easy but it will be difficult.
