Solid vs crush sleeve color pinion

Is there a solid sleeve for our rear ends v6? And if so has anyone done it. I think I’m going to have to re adjust the preload on my bearings. And I’m aiming towards a solid sleeve.

When I had my rear diff built I had ECGS install one it's was around 30 or 40 dollars extra iirc. I highly recommend doing it though if you have the option.
 
Solid all the way! There is no reason to use a crush. People swear they will be just fine but the truth is the preload can change pretty easlily. Why take a chance and have your bearings fail? Go solid and be done.
 
That's the one. The V6 one is shorter because of the larger pinion bearing

Right. So LROR offers two options. The v6 and the 8”” toyota. Clearly our rear ends are 8”. So I’m guessing I need to order the 8” and not the v6?
 
Called LowRangeOffRoad and they said order the v6 option and not the 8” option ( that’s for the 4cyl)
 
im pretty sure the 8" would be for the 4cyl. im not sure what year, but I think at some point Toyota started using the v6 diff for all of them.
 
Used a solid spacer in mine too. Zuk set it up. As others said it was only like $30 more. Our trucks should all have “V6” diffs.
 
Both the v6/turbo and 4 cylinder diffs are 8-inch diffs and are interchangeable between housings. The difference is that the V6/turbo has a heavier duty casting with more reinforcements and both larger carrier bearings and a larger pinion bearing. That's why the v6 pinion sleave is much shorter.

All 3rd gens had the v6 casting though. 4 cylinder casting hasn't been widely used since the first gen.

So I ordered the v6 option from LowRangeOffRoad along with new pinion nut.

From my previous thread. This was the issue for my vibration. Where I though I had a bad drive shaft and axle flange/shaft. Turned out my pinion bolt was loose. Or basically the sleeve crushed more. When we tighten it a little. The vibration went away but you can hear the gears whine or is t the bearings ? Either way I parked it after one test drive. So now I’ll just replace it all with solid sleeve and should be good. What you guys think ??
 
have you set up many diffs?

if its whining, you may have already damaged the pinion bearings. if you're going in far enough to replace the crush collar, you might as well replace all the bearings too.

Me and my friend replaced the bearings before. I started to get a vibration after a VA off road trip. Until few days, we diagnosed it. It’s the pinion. It was not whining. It gave me vibration under certain speeds or acceleration. Now that we tightened it probably more then it was originally set for. The whine sounds like “tight” gear tolerance. Under the same speeds that the vibration happened. But no more vibration. So the crush sleeve is no good. The bearing could be whining because now it has to much pressure.

I’ve had a bad pinion bearing. And I know the sound of it. Along with BAD DIFF FLUID COLOR. Which is not the case. I think if I simply replace the sleeve to solid. I should be good.

And I’ll be honest. Setting up the Toyota’s elocker diff. Is ****ing easy !
 
lots of people say they are easy, and they are. however they are also easy to do wrong. I see more people think they know how to do it, only to screw it up.


for me, I wouldn't be going into it that far, and tearing it down all the way without redoing it completely. its just not worth it.

Yeah it’s what I though. So because it didn’t make the whine noise that I had before replacing my bearings. I assume that my bearings are good but under to much load. Bad pinion bearing usually has a distinctive sound. And it’s usually around all rpms. This however sounds nothing like it. And like I mentioned before. My diff fluid is clean. The whine only happened after test driving the truck after tight in the pinion bolt.

The elocker diff doesn’t even use shims. So it is easy. And if you have the proper tools Along with FSM. Don’t see why someone couldn’t do it.
