For some reason the threads holding on my driver's side parking brake bellcrank blew out and the bellcrank bolts fell into the drum when I was on a road trip recently. The loose hardware in the drum locked the wheel solid. To get us back on the road, I replaced the shoes and left the bellcrank uninstalled, because I couldn't get a new one quickly, and that worked fine for a few hundred miles. Then, that same brake started dragging and overheating to the point where I was afraid I'd get a brake fire, so I backed the adjuster off so much that that brake just didn't do much of anything.
That solution got us through the end of the road trip, but now I'm trying to fix the problem for real. From what I've read, many people have issues with the bellcrank seizing and overheating the rear brakes, but since I didn't even have the bellcrank installed, that couldn't have caused the problem. I was using new shoes, and cleaned everything thoroughly before reassembly.
Any idea as to what might be causing my problem? I'm not sure what else to try, and I really don't want to get stranded again. I got the drums resurfaced, in case they were warped and that was causing issues.
