Some questions about the chrome badges

I ran across a thread where someone suggested using fishing line to remove the badging. I tried it and it worked great.

First question is what is the best way to remove all the leftover adhesive on the badges and paint? I've used goo-gone so far and it doesn't work too well. I'm worried about rubbing too much and dulling the paint.

Second question is what is the best way to re-install them?
I was thinking Black RTV since the badges will all be black when I'm done, but I do not want to harm the paint, and it seems like it would end up being a mess.

Use citrus degreaser to remove the adhesive, double sided 3M to put painted badges on

I've also "heard" dental floss works well for removing badges.

I second the 3M double sided tape for replacing the badges.

Getting off the adhesive is the absolutely the worst part of removing emblems, decals, stripes, etc.

After removing the emblems with fishing line, try to roll up the adhesive and pick it off the vehicle.

Then the best way I've found is to use Goo-Gone and my fingernail (I find my thumbnail works the best) and a non-abrasive scrub pad. The goo-gone softens the adhesive and I use my fingernail to remove what I can, then keep doing it until it's all gone. I've used a scrubby (for dishes) using the scratch side with goo-gone and removed a racing stripe adhesive (worst I've done! Had been on for 5 years!). I used the scrubby w/goo-gone to remove what's left after I've scraped off what I could with my fingernail.

I've also used WD-40 and paint thinner. Body shops have plastic scrapers that's I've used too, but my fingernail and goo-gone works the best imo. The scrubby pad w/goo-gone did not damage any clearcoat or single coat paint jobs. Sometimes heat guns and hair dryers help too; AZ sun/heat works too!. Some body shops use a 3M rubber wheel to remove adhesive; but I've never used one and I hear you have to be real careful not to damage your paint job. It's real easy I guess to burn through the clearcoat. I've also heard of some using a high pressure washer/steam cleaner to remove adhesives.

It's a tedious job for sure.

Once done, if you have an area that doesn't quite blend in with the rest of the paint, use something like ScratchX to blend in.

Spent over 4 hours once to remove a pair of air deflectors off my side windows. I will never put those on again!

Use 3M two-sided adhesive tape that you can buy at AutoZone or O'Rielly's to reinstall them. Generally a white two-sided adhesive tape is found, but if you look around there is a gray adhesive tape available that is similar to what Toyota and others use to install the emblem. Use exacto knifes/blades to cut what you need.

I've used Goo-gone and my finger nail a few times.... works great! Gotta do the badges on my Taco now!
