You cannot run 16". It will touch the caliper. 17" is the way to go unless you never off-road, in which case 18" or 20" are the most popular. I recommend just sticking with a 17x9.
 
You can technically run a 16" rim, I have seen it done, but it is not recommended. It requires a wheel spacer to clear the caliper and you end up with very little backspacing..... 17" is probably what you want.

Since the OP didn't specify the year/version of his 4runner, the answer is difficult. I have an '03 SR5. V6, and the 16" wheels from an "02 fit just fine, without any modification or spacer required. But, I also have the standard brake package. I also have a set of the factory steel wheels for that year, which are also 16".

As I understand it, if you have the Sport or Limited, with the larger brake package, 16" wheels will probably need some modification to fit.

He posted in the 5th Gen forum. 5th Gen 4Runners come from the factory with 17" wheels at a minimum for a reason. Brake caliper clearance.

Yes, but there are still a lot of questions that the top of the tire fitment guide thread does not answer. It gives a great snapshot overview, but people continue to have detailed questions. Like "could 16" wheels fit".

I complained that the reason we keep getting the same questions over and over is that details are missing from the fitment guide. Thus the reason for my post 16 pages down in that thread. I don't expect anyone to read 16 pages of mostly noise.

And again 16" rims can be made to fit. I have seen it done with procomp steelies and spacers. Not recommended, but totally doable if y you have a 16" fetish. :love:

You could definitely make a 16 fit and probably a 15, if you want to swap out for a smaller caliper and whatever else is needed to make em fit.

I'm sure I could fit skateboard wheels if I really wanted to, but I don't think that's that the OP was getting at lol
