Spare Tire Rotation

Does the dealership maintenace service rotate in the spare when rotating your tires? I noticed other service stations don't. It could cause havoc with the differentials and the VSC system if you put a brand new spare in service with the rest of the worn tires....

The additional cost to rotate in the spare will pay for the cost of the spare tire over a normal set of tires. I just rotate the 4 on the ground. If I need to use the spare it is only temporary until I get the flat fixed, not enough to cause any differential problems. I have the Michelin CrossTerrains and will replace with the same tires. I did the same thing with my 95 LC and never caused any problem with the diff's. If you are that concerned just never use the spare for any high speed and long term driving after the other tires get worn down.

I rotate the tires myself, and include the spare in the rotation. This way all tires will get equal street time, and wear evenly. As long as all five tires are the same type/size, the little bit of difference between the spare and the other four shouldn't have any effect on the VSC or diffs.

I just had my tires rotated at the dealer yesterday. They do not rotate the spare, only the 4 on the ground. At least mine doesn't. If you ask them they probally will do it for you. I thought they would of did it. I guess I should have told them to and not assumed(ass-u-me).

The Toyota dealer that I take my 4Runner to has not been including the spare in the rotation. They also just move the tires front to back but don't exchange left and right as Toyota recommends in the 4Runner manual. I put some marks on the wheels so that I could see what they were doing.

Perhaps this weekend I will have time to exchange my spare with one of the other wheels.
