Spare tire spot into cargo area?

Has anybody built a compartment that uses the factory spare tire area?, granted you'd probably have a safari rack with the tire up top, duh... But it looks like a little re-inforce ment and some metal skills could turn that area into an inside accessible hatched compartment that could even house a full spare, amongst other things like tools or parts, etc... If done right from the outside nobody would be the wiser.... Well if it's already been done I'd like to see some pics.... Otherwise I may have to go cut out a jeeps spare tire compartment and get the welder out....

I think a few people on here have built some small ones, to store spare CV's and such. It would be easy to attach any kind of box down there with some metal straps to the crossmember. I've been thinking about putting a 15 gallon water tank down there on mine.

I am currently designing a new rear bumper with a tire carrier for my truck. With the spare out from under the truck, I've been wondering what I can do with that empty space. I've been thinking about putting some sort of storage box under there. I wouldn't be able to access it from inside the truck though, because my storage box would cover it up.

Looking for ideas too.

yeah that's the common modification for that area and one of my dreams, with my rack, cargo storage box i already have enough storage, just need more range and figure a spare aux tank is better than having 3~4 gas cans on teh roof or stupidly in the truck ..or wherever people store such things.. just my thoughts on this, it's be cool to see someone cut the floor out of the back of their runner to make a deeper storage compartment though.. i say have at it and show us what's up ;-)

My father in law did something like that on his 1st Gen 4Runner. Not his pictures, but same idea.

Neat idea but with access from inside the rear could be problematic if the truck was loaded. You would have to take everything out.

I really like the idea of using that available space, perhaps with something that used the factory spare winch so you could lower down parts box??? Hmmmmm
