Spare Tire Storage

So... I HAVE to think there is something out there: has anyone come across a storage container to put in the place of the stock spare tire location? With spare tires that don't fit (and have to put elsewhere -- the back, the roof, etc.) this seems like a great place to store some stuff, using that little hoist to raise and lower it. The closest thing I could find is this -- obviously not a 4Runner and wouldn't work w/ our hoist but you get the idea here.

That is just super cool! Almost makes me want to not use that area to store a spare tire in. Almost. I'm not that heavy duty of an off-roader so the factory location is great for me.

That's awesome! Thinking hard plastic / enclosed like the vanagon idea but raisable via the factory crank mechanism. I'm picturing a black plastic donut (or square/rectangle) w/ doors on the top to put things in there and remain sealed from the elements. If anyone comes across something like this, I am all in. The 33" spare does not look like it's going to fit w/o rubbing the panhard bar badly.

this is a great idea. I think something rectangle would be best for optimizing the space. but in terms accessibility maybe something with two drawers that pull out toward the rear. then you dont have to climb under the car to grab anything. just drop the box to the ground, and pull the drawers out.

pretty much a smaller version of a interior storage box.
