Spark Plug Clarification!

There is no NGK Iridium plug replacement for the 4L V6 OEM. Also there is a difference between the NGK Iridium IX and the NGK OE Laser Iridium, for the V8. The IX will last up to 40K miles and the Laser plug is OEM replacement that will last approx 100K miles.

In another related thread someone said that the IX was the superior plug. Is it and it just has a shorter change interval? Or isn the lazer the superior one AND has a longer change interval?

The Laser is the more expensive, longer lasting plug. That's why I thought a clarification was needed.

So what's the verdict then? Just stick to stock denso replacements on the V6 or Denso iridium or the NGK Vpower?

V6 repalcement plugs

I had an even mix, 3 of each, of NGK and Denso plugs in my '04 V6. I changed the plugs out at 41,000 and wouldn't think twice about running the stock Denso plugs out to 45,000. The NGK plugs had opened up to a gap of .052" and the Densos were at .045" or just .001" over the starting gap if they were gapped correctly in the begining. They were holding up much better than the NGK's in my application.

I've had 50K miles on a Toyota 3.4 V6 with 3 NGKs/3 Denso's and the NGKs looked new and the Denso's looked about half used. I have heard this from most all who have experienced this. This would lead me to believe the NGKs are much better. What may have happened in your case, the gap may have not been right on the NGKs when installed.

I would use the Denso Iridium IKH20, it seems to be the best plug available for the V6.

NGK vs Denso

Koz,
I just read your post on your 3.4 V6. Quite interesting the differences and the similiarities. My plugs were also split evenly the NGK's were all on the drivers side and had noticeable erosion of the electrode in my engine. The Densos looked very good with the exception of some blow through on one insulator which I have seen on many different makes of plugs at different times. Between these 2 particular plugs I'd go with the Densos. If I can get the picture resized to fit as an attachment you could see the differences. Not all plugs are created, equal even under the same brand name, and will burn/erode at different rates because of many different factors. In this case I think the electrode in the NGK's was the factor. We have Denso coil packs in our Toyota's.

I can tell you that in the high performance motorcycle world NGKs are the plugs of choice! I've seen so many people have problems with other brands and end up going back to NGKs and the problems were GONE!
