Speedo Working Intermittently

Hi All, Ive done multiple searches but was hoping someone could help confirm what Ive been reading. So on my way back from a recent trip my speedo randomly stopped working but comes back intermittently.

There are no lights on the dash indicating any issues and the ODO, tach, temp, fuel gauges all work as normal. It seems as though the VSS (Variable Speed Sensor) may be going bad? This is located on the trans on the passenger's side correct? Or could this be a wheel speed sensor issue?

Any insight or confirmation would be greatly appreciated!

[MENTION=620928]Rus.K[/MENTION] I have something similar going on with my speedo. I haven’t tried this fix yet because it requires soldering on the circuit board but Scott Lam at “The Track Ahead” does a good write up on it here:

But if your not familiar soldering on circuit boards I wouldn’t attempt it unless your prepared to make a mistake and have to replace the whole cluster.

As Scott mentions you can buy the stepper motor here:

They also offer a repair service if you want to send your cluster in but it’s a bit pricey at $175 or buy a completely refurbished cluster for $310 at the time of this post.

Did you ever get it fixed?

I finally got around to doing this fix for myself. I found a buddy of mine who was comfortable soldering on circuit boards. I ordered the stepper motor for the speedometer, then when he had time for it, I pulled the speedometer out and brought it to him. He installed the stepper motor and then when it was ready, I put it all back together and got it working… I tried the method Scott mentions for reinstalling the gauge needles but it didn’t work the first time, I had to pull them off and reset them a few times before I got them all where they needed to be, not sure if there’s an exact method for this but eventually I got it all working again ���� It’s been 3 weeks now and no issues speedometer works everytime ����.

Oh as a side note for anyone trying this don’t forget to make a note or take a picture of where your gas tank gauge is at. I had no idea so I had to go fill up the tank and reset the needle again just for the gas gauge so that I knew for sure it was turning on to the right spot.

While it’s great to have this fixed now, I do have 33” tires, so even though the speedometer is working again it’s not totally accurate because of the lift and the larger tire size.. maybe someday I’ll try the speed-o-healer. But I’m happy enough it’s working again.
