Speedometer mystery

1990 4Runner, 3VZE, manual.

My speedometer isn't working. I unscrewed the cable from the transfer-case and spun it and the speedometer worked. Then I lifted the rear wheels and spun them too and felt the little gear inside the t-case spin too. Then I istalled the cable back without tightening the outside cap and through the crack saw that the cable spun when the wheels were turned.

Got happy and tighten the cap, with wheels in the air started engine and shifted gears.. the speedo dosn't work...

Any ideas where is the problem? Could it be that little gear lose enough to not spin the cable-speedometer assembly?

Thanks!!!

You probably have a break in the speedo cable between the speedo and the transmission. Did you verify that the cable rotates where it connects to the speedo head?

I didn't open the dash. The speedo worked when I spun the cable at the transmission end, so I figured that part was ok.

Do you think the little gear in the transmission may be slipping under cable/speedo tension?

Thanks
