Sport Edition vs. UrbanRunner

I've read former threads on this, so excuse the redundancy. But I've been looking for close to 2 months, and still torn. Like the look of both the Sport and UR, but have seen the bad reviews on the TomTom Nav system in the UR and don't want that to be the only deciding factor.

I won't be doing a lot of off-roading. But I will be towing a boat and doing some occasional winter-weather driving in the NC mountains. Can't wait to trade the wife's '01 Highlander and get something with some t----cles.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/guidance you can throw to a T4R newbie.

I wouldn't get too horny about the UrbanRunner, its not really its "own trim" they basically just took a Sport and put in some goodies that an soccer mom would like, you can't even get them up here. If your going to be winter driving in mountains then I would just buy the most reasonable truck with 4x4.

There's lots a deciding factors but I wouldn't let the TomTom unit be one of them, it might be rubbish but it's better than the stock unit you'll get in the Sport anyways plus there fairly cheap and easy to replace.

The UrbanRunner IS a sport (that's what it starts life as), just different interior, color matched grille, limited 18" wheels, and the tom tom integrated head unit. I have no complaints about any part of my UR. I never use the tom tom except as a map if I need to know where I am. I'll always use google maps on my phone for navigation.

The UR I looked at had 17" rims, sport rims actually. The big difference is the TomTom (not very good GPS or stereo) and the seat trim.. The UR I looked at had stiching on the drivers seat coming apart and the bolsters looked like very thin pleather compared to the sport seats. SO I went with the sport and have had no regrets.

Looking at a black '08 Sport that has everything I want except sunroof. Has anyone had an after-market sunroof put in? What should I expect in terms of costs and quality?

Uhh...not sure where you got that. It's PLENTY updatable and customizable using tom tom home. Been there, done that. Not quite sure where all the hate from the h/u comes from anyways...it's not bad enough to not buy a vehicle, then again when is the aftermarket NOT better than factory when it comes to the audio department.

Bad idea. And not worth the money. You won't use it as much as you think and it's just one more thing that can leak or break.

I wish my truck didn't have a sunroof.

If you want a sunroof, get a 4Runner with a factory sunroof. You don't want some shop cutting the roof of your truck because that has trouble written all over. I can't live without a sunroof so my recommendation is if your spending the money, get what you really want.

As for the sport vs urban, the urban has the 18'' Limited rims, urban badging and built in portable Tom Tom. If I recall, the Urbans were not built with a V8 either.

Urban looses the V8. If you're pulling a boat, you want that. That's what makes the 4th gen worth it IMO.

I have the sunroof, but if I did it again, I would skip it go get the extra 2" of headroom. I'm only 5' 10" but have the seat all the way down and I'm darn close to the roof.

The Tom Tom gets bad reviews. I added a Kenwood Nav unit and love it. plus you can add a back up camera, has iphone connectivity, Sirius/xm radio, bluetooth, etc. All for about $1500.

thanks for the info ZIMM. I'm 6-1 and concerned about the headroom. I lowered the seat all the way when I test-drove, and it was decent.
Damn, I want a sunroof, though.

Definitely think I'm off the Urban now and going the Sport route.

Anyone have thoughts on '08 vs. '09? Much of a difference? I see a bunch of '08s for sale. Thanks to all who have replied.

I think '06-'09 are all the same. '09 had a "trail edition" that was V6 only. Nothing wrong with '08, there're lots of them because it was before gas prices took a hike. I bought mine new when the '09's were coming out and got a steal on it.
