Spring Break 2015 in Moab

Alright this is going to be the picture dump for [MENTION=78892]Fishwerks[/MENTION] [MENTION=94888]EatonKyleH[/MENTION] and my trip to Moab. Plus all of you guys that tagged along on various days like [MENTION=95069]TBuzz[/MENTION] , [MENTION=108751]ARC[/MENTION] , [MENTION=77045]99 sr5 highlander[/MENTION] . Eventually once the video gets done I will add it to this post so people can see it and then go into the pictures. I didn't take many pictures so this will mostly be a dump of Chris' pictures. After the three reserved posts any of you guys can feel free to add any pictures that you guys took so we can have it all in one spot

Metal Masher

After a night around the campfire the first trail we ran was Metal Masher. Rated 5-8 on Trail Damage (8 mostly because of Rock Chucker, which is enormous, Widow Maker is un-rated and absolutely ridiculous).

The Xterra was having some weird power issues and was refusing to bump up this ledge, tires weren't even spinning. So out came Kyle's winch.

Kane Creek

The second day we ran Kane Creek, rated a 6-7 on Trail Damage. [MENTION=95069]TBuzz[/MENTION] joined the crew which was nice since he had run the trail before. About 1/4 mile into the trail one of the bolts for the rear sway bar mount on his axle ripped out and wedged in the spring. 10 minutes later the sway bar was out and we were back on the trail.

Narrow little v-notch thing that was optional. Lots of risk for spare tire carriers here, my hitch is basically a rear rock slider to me so I went for it. Did a tripod stand on the front wheels and the hitch, rear tires were totally off the ground at one point.

This rock is a real threat for body damage, gotta go high on the driver side to avoid clipping it.

Kane Creek continued

More Kane Creek. The high rating of this trail is really due to one hill that is super chunky and sits on the edge of a high cliff, with the creek below.

I got pretty tippy towards the shelf road edge right here, felt pretty sketchy for a few seconds. Got through it though.

After he got up it was the 4th gens turn, got up relatively easily. The A-trac on those things seems to help, not quite like a locker but better than nothing.

Sevenmile Rim and Wipeout Hill

The third day we ran Sevenmile Rim, rated a 4 on Trail Damage if you don't count the Wipeout Hill obstacle. I think that obstacle brings the rating up to a 7. The night before we ran into some other 3rd gen guys at Milt's Stop n' Eat, [MENTION=77045]99 sr5 highlander[/MENTION] and [MENTION=122268]Cruisersam[/MENTION], who decided to join us for the trail run. [MENTION=108751]ARC[/MENTION] had also gotten in touch with us before the trip, and met up with us in town.

This is my brother's 4th gen, [MENTION=122219]Twenman4[/MENTION] , this was his first wheeling trip so he got a trial by fire. He didn't turn down many obstacles though. Plus he goaded most of us into obstacles we thought about by-passing. Made for a great trip.

Wipeout Hill time, [MENTION=108751]ARC[/MENTION] decided to tackle this obstacle first. Pretty sketchy obstacle, pictures don't do the steepness justice. Andrew on the way down, there is another steep part below this.

Tracy gave Wipeout Hill a go as well, pretty ballsy for his first wheeling trip.

The real trick to the obstacle is remembering to turn driver at the top after you mash on the gas. There is a large rock wall that is pretty marked up from people smashing into it. Everyone else remembered to turn, Tracy wasn't so lucky.

Tracy called us on the radio, and said his truck wasn't looking quite right. I wish I took a photo when we pulled up to him. His passenger front tire was toed WAY out and cambered WAY in, uh oh. Something had gotten worse after the Wipeout Hill incident.

After some investigating by the master trail mechanic Kyle, he determined the steering knuckle was bent. Shit, tough trail fix. Kyle adjusted the toe as far in as he could. We cannibalized a wheel spacer from one of the 3rd gens because we couldn't get the tire off the UCA and were worried about blowing the sidewall out. I think the knuckle bent and was weakened on Wipeout Hill, then a ledge drop or something bent the knuckle even further.

Final result of the trail repair. Good enough to drive out on. We drove it the 15 miles back to Moab like this and parked it. We were leaving the next day so we headed back to camp for the night.

The next day we packed up and headed back into town. We attempted to source a used knuckle and hub assembly so we wouldn't have to worry about pressing out the wheel bearing. The closest one we could find was Salt Lake City, which is like 200 miles. Safari LTD was helpful in Grand Junction, but they were booked through the week. The only option we were left with was the Toyota dealer in Grand Junction. We rented a tow dolly but his truck was too wide to fit on the damn thing, so we were forced to call a tow truck. The good news is that Tracy's attitude was good about the whole thing, and the truck will be fixed. Plus he busted the truck on a pretty gnarly obstacle, so he officially has his first wheeling trip and trail damage under his belt.

Overall it was a badass trip, stoked on the whole thing, including the trail damage. It was good meeting and wheeling with some new people too. Moab is too much fun, I'm already bummed to be home instead of camping out there.

Hey All, , I had a real good time. Met some solid people and enjoyed a mild day of wheeling in great weather. I also managed to learn a few things. First of which, never ever be near the ejection side of a max track. When it flew out it was breaking ankles or teeth. I consider myself very luck to have this pretty smile still and hoping everyone remembers that nono.
Good job spotting andworkig the group throug by everyone. Appreciate the efforts put forth to take all the photos. Looks like you guys made the most of it. My petty contribution or now until I figure out gopro software.

Chris-I wish I could say the bolt tore out. I'd liked to think so. A real pretrail ride inspection may have proven thatbit was just loose. Thus lesson two for me as to always follow up with basic inspections.

Tyler-It drove fine, it's not that far and it's wide open highway, nobody to pass. I pulled in at 8:45 thinking you guys were at the brewery.

That's quite the trail repair that was pulled off, what a team. I would say that was likely that hardest day of that trucks life.

Kane's was not as hard as last year. It seamed to me that a lot of erosion and maybe razors trashed it. Especially on the last obstacle. I noticed the ledges aren't what they were. Still a fun beautiful trail that none of the 4runners had issues with. One thing I will say if you don't have a rear locker, I hope your middle name is "mason". There's a couple spots that u cant help but get on opposite corners. That's where the two others struggled most.
If you like your paint don't do it, period.
