No, if this works, it will take the unused room on top of the wheel well. The floor area of the cargo bay will still be untouched.

why don't you just measure the back portion above the wheel well (the width and height to the existing bolt holes) and email them for a dimensional diagram of the basket and then you'd know for sure...

I mean, it's just two bolts so it'd work (or you could make it work) and the brackets could always be shortened/ modified to make it stick out less...

I can't clearly tell the mounting point(s). It looks, size-wise, that it would fit, but I don't know whether or not the mounting would create issues.
 
OK, I emailed springtail and they said the basket is not compatible with our 4th gens and they currently have no plans to make one.

So, I did what every self respecting 4runner.org member does. I MacGyver'd it. Used 4 mini two hole D-rings with self-tapping screws on each side. I went with the two hole D-rings instead of the one holed ones to spread the load/tension more. And 4 per side to spread it even more.

Happy with it so far and the dog doesn't mind the intrusion in his area, and the wasted space above the wheel wells are put to good use.

ok, first off, I admire your ingenuity to finding a functional solution to your storage need... buuuuuuuuut
I also have to say the way you have that macgyver (one of my favorite shows by the way growing up) rigged would drive me up a wall if I had to look at it every day... and this solution probably wouldn't be Angus approved. It looks like you bungee'd two dirty clothes hampers above your wheel wells, just sayin'...
There has to be a more aesthetically appealing, cost effective solution. What are you try to achieve/ store out of sight?

I like Springtail's products but they really seem only interested in their current contracts and SKUs. I contacted them three times in the past two years about designing MOLLE racks for the 4Runners like they do FJ Cruisers, twice about general products and once about a one off product for myself only; each time I was turned down due to a "lack of enough interest" in such a product and an implied disinterest in designing one. Again I'm not bashing the company, they're products are awesome (I badly want a set of rip away MOLLE bags), but as you can tell by their website they have a lot of government, LEO, and FD contracts; their civilian market is more geared to "mainstream" off roaders like the Wrangler and FJ Cruiser.

Its a shame really, good stuff... Just not for us. I wish I had more time to design and prototype stuff for our 4Runners; lots of ideas, just no time... :(
 
IMHO You should have just bout the mpac basket ditched the mounts and fabbed your own on the cheap although allot of the cost is in the billet mounts.

LOLLL Dude, MacGyvering something means you are doing a hack job. It doesn't usually look pretty.

I am in fact bungeeing two clothes hamper like boxes up there. Eventually, I will get aluminum/billet tool boxes, but getting those D-rings in place is the goal here. I can hold up whatever I want and use that space.

To answer your question, one box has all my dog's stuff. Food, bowls, toys, frisbees, towels, etc. The other box has the hi-lift offroad base (which is big and awkward and doesn't really fit anywhere), toolbox, recovery straps, hitch, pins, 3/8 extension to use the spare wheel lift, etc. By using the wasted space above the wheel wells, I freed up space in the cabin/passenger area.

Not so much the billet mounts as they're more or less aluminum spacers with matching bolts. The problem is that you need a secure mounting area. Notice in the .pdf they reuse a stock welded bolt in the body which is going to be fairly strong.

Many of the cheap ones tend to be poorly secured to the body and barely support any weight (hell even their website goes into depth about this), which has been a design issue of mine with penciling a version for the 4Runner.

I know i have the Mpac side rack on my FJ. I was just saying you would be paying approx $90 more for mounts you don't need just for the basket .There have got to be hard points in a 4th gen that you could take some aluminum bar stock and fab mounts from?

It can't be that different from what you're trying to achieve, right? make a left and right storage built around the wheel wells on each side, no higher than the rear seat height and flush with the width of the fender. Have entry from the hatch side or top side (in case you want to reach in with the rear window down)... walla... it'd maybe cost you $100 in supplies... get some thin 1/4"-3/8" mdf and screw it to a 1x1 frame.. paint it black and your done. it'll give you more storage, more access flexibility and look more oem than any other option probably... just an idea. It'd leave the entire hatch area free for the dog, you could even build in a water/food tray for the pup with a little pre planning if he/she spends a lot of time back there...

Yeah you are on to what I should be doing. Building a small compartment over the wheel wells is the way to go, holds stuff in more securely too. But unfortunately, my MacGyver skills don't extend to wood working :becky:
