sputter attack

i have a 99 4runner sport with a 3.4 ltr.......standard shift....when running down the road at a constant speed it sputters occasionally like the eng. stops running for brief sec.......not sure where to start...hoping maybe its a commin thing and can be easily fixed.....any insight is greatly appreciated......

when were the plugs and wires last replaced?
check MAF (make sure you clean it with MAF cleaner)
clean your throttle body while you're at it.
that's where I would start.
