According to Priddy, the prototype Humvee sports a completely revised front end that is clearly larger than the current model's. It's thought that the new hood will allow for the repackaging of the intake system and relocation of the cooling system from the top of the motor to the front. Speaking of the motor, the "GEP No. 7" printed under the door is likely a reference to General Engine Products, one of AM General's subsidiaries that supplies the engines for Humvees. This prototype probably has a new version of GEP's 6.5L diesel with a big bump in power over the old model. It's also rumoured the powertrain will include a hybrid electric to improve fuel economy, as well.

Also notice the prototype cab, specifically the bare metal that indicates AM General is designing this new truck with a "blast tub" that will protect occupants from explosives, specifically rocket propelled grenades and IEDs. It also appears that the prototype has a significantly higher ground clearance than the current model

Interesting and practical redesign. I'm especially glad they are going to a more powerful engine. The current one is way underpowered and not up to the task of properly moving these trucks.

The redesigned hood will reduce forward visibility but it's worth it; the current radiator placement is horrible and overheated engines are a huge problem over here. It is so bad that some units have cut holes in their hoods and affixed exposed electric fans on top of the hoods to aid in cooling.

I am sure that the suspension was not modified for added ground clearance, but to better handle the extra weight of the armor. They will not sit so high once the armor and turret are added. Our humvees have so much armor that there is hardly any suspension articulation. This is a particular problem when you have to drive over a berm or a high curb. The trucks are so heavy now that the front wheels frequently bow outwards very noticably.

I am skeptical on the possibility of a hybrid. There is just too much energy draw on these things to allow the engine to shut off when idling. The amount of batteries necessary to power them would be prohibitive. Plus, there is no extra space for them.

I really like the possibility of adding reactive armor. This will definitely save lives as will the blast tub. About the only other thing I think it needs is a v-shaped hull. Then it'd really be just about perfect. In the meantime, this is a great start.

GM is getting really aggressive about their hybrids. Yukon/Tahoe Hybrid will be available Sept/Oct this year (2007) after 3 years of testing in the Yosemite mountains with larger hybrid systems for buses and rescue vehicles. I don't think a Hybrid would work well for military applications (batteries typically don't like being blown up), but possibly less combat environments they could work.
