Squeak heard when going over a bump

Hey guys,

I'm getting a small squeak when hitting a speed bump. What could it be? My rigs got 220k miles on the odometer. I did hear that it could be the ball jounts (i'm on the originals). I will replace them soon either way. Truck is a 2000 4Runner 4x4 Limited Sport.

A little bit more information is needed:
From the front? back? any particular side?
Does it sound like it comes from below you? Or is it potentially the body?
Give all details you can when diagnosing a noise.


That said, I personally suspect sway bar bushings, they often cause a squeak. Get under there and check out all of those (link bushings and mounting bushings), if they are dryrotted and old, replace. If they are newer poly bushings then they are also very likely to squeak!

I agree with the other information commented.
Check your bushings, they may be old and squeaking.
Also, check the body parts like the fenders. Mine were squeaking where the fender met the front quarter panel so I sprayed some lubricant in there and problem solved.
If you have a friend close by ask them to press up and down on the car while you are underneath to listen for squeaks. Do this with the hood down and up on different occasions.
It’s a good idea to replace your ball joints anyway especially at 220k miles but to be sure you could lift the car and check them for play. There are many videos and threads on how to do this.

The squeak is happening in the front of the truck. I'm assuming somethings up with the suspension. I wouldn't think the bumpers would make noise, but I could definitely check too.

Check your front stabilizer bar links and bushings they can squeak if going bad.

My guess is gonna be A-Arm bushings, or swaybar bushings (if not the links themselves). A little WD40 or silicone lube may or may not help find it. Could always take a hypodermic syringe, fill it full of grease and squirt it into your ball joint boots also to ensure they're sufficiently lubricated, though they'll typically squeal like hell to practically any steering input or response to the road. The majority of the time it's one of the previously mentioned bushings.
Yet another way in which solid axle shines - if you have a creak or squeak chances are you'll find it in 5-10 minutes.

This, nothing a little moly can't solve though. Most people like Whiteline include a little packet with your bushings, very handy dandy to keep in the glovebox! Actually just had to grease up my new Dorman bushings today, since every time the car tilted forwards they produced this annoying honking sound/squeak. Heard (and hoping) it goes away eventually.

If you are on your original ball joints you are probably due to replace the bushings on the sway bar. They are fairly cheap and easy to replace while you are working on the ball joints. My money is on the ball joints for the squeak though.

FWIW I didn't notice any issues on the a-arm bushings when I replaced my uppers last year, but did notice lots of rot on the sway bar connects.
