Stalls while stopped in D

repo

The last couple weeks my mpg dropped way down to like 14mpg. Then a few days ago I noticed the idle felt a little rough after a while of waiting in a drive thru, and today it stalled while waiting at a drive thru again (in D with foot on the brake). It felt like it ran out of gas. It started back up fine when I put it in P.

No codes, drives OK otherwise. RPMs in D is 590, and in P is 690-700.

Any ideas?

When was last 'general' tuneup done (e.g. wires/plugs/maf-iac-intake cleaning) done?

Plugs/wires about 30k ago, MAF/IAC/PCV etc about 20k ago.

The other thing is I ran the tank empty right while driving up my steep driveway and so put in a few gallons of fresh lawnmower gas with Stabil in it to get it to the gas station. But I can't remember if that was before or after I noticed the weak idling feel. And it runs fine ok the highway.

Was this premixed gas, or just regular gas with Stabil earmarked to be used in the mower?

I knew someone who used premix in their car, or at least tried to until it caused an injector to clog and it killed the pump.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, check to make sure a hose did not pop off.

If not that then your IAC is clogged. If you have a code reader, do you have any pending codes?

EDIT: just saw the posts on the gas. Probably not an idle issue then.

It was straight non-ethanol gas that I got last week, but I put Stabil in it for the mower because it usually sits around a while.

Run this tank almost to empty and fill it up. Put a bottle or two of fuel system cleaner or seafoam (1/3 to 2/3 bottle) in the tank as well and see if the problems persists.

At the age of these fuel pumps (not just on 4runners) if they are run dry for any time it can be quite detrimental for them.

I'd take a close look at the idle air controller as well as the main fuse. Change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done lately but don't be surprised that the fuel pump may need to be replaced.

Mine does this once in a while. Not often at all. Only after the motor has warmed up. I'll be sitting at a light, the idle gets rough, then sometimes it quits. It always starts right back up . Last summer I replaced all plugs & wires, cleaned the intake, MAF, and IAC. Still persists. Like I said, it only happens once in a while. Mayne every two months. So I haven't worried about it. But the seafoam or fuel system cleaner sound like a good idea.

Mine did this one time. The day I bought it actually lol. Was towing my car behind the 4Runner and, after about 2 hours of driving, pulled off to a restaurant. The moment I made a complete stop it shut off in drive still. I put it in park and it started up like nothing happened. That was 06/03/2016 and it hasn't happened since.

Given that mine only does it about once every two months, you are probably due!

Mine has actually been doing this as well so I'm curious as to what the issue is. Almost the same symptoms except mine hasn't stalled on me yet. Mine has an idle drop in Drive that'll make the vehicle shake quite noticeably, usually worse with the AC off. No codes or pending codes, and runs great besides the loping idle drop. Also has new plugs/wires/fuel filter and properly cleaned MAF/IAC/Throttle Body

mine is doing this as well, 2001. It does not have an accessible IAC to clean:(
it will stall several times, and at times upon restarting it will stall before i can shift to drive

I had a very similar issue come about on a customers Nissan Xtera. It would only stall in drive or reverse. Park or neutral were normal engine idle, no vacuum leaks or engine codes. The torque converter clutch was stuck locked up in this case, thus causing the engine to stall. I replaced the torque converter and all was good again. May not be your exact issue but its worth bringing up.

Edit: Also worth mentioning that in drive or reverse the idle was very low, maybe 480-510 rpm but park or neutral was completely normal.

I know this may be the extreme version of things, but I had that happen 2 1/2 years ago. Toyota looked at it and diagnosed it as 2/3 engine coils weren't working properly. I had it really bad, but after the work was done on it it runs perfectly fine.

i think i found why mine had been stalling and idling rough. plug wire at cylinder one was not fully seated in the coil pack and was arcing, also had a large tear in the vacuum hose that runs to the air box. fixed these two things and its been doing great since

2001 tranny problem

2001 4runner lifted, I got off the interstate a few weeks ago and it stalled out as i was stopping at the light as If it was stuck in a high gear. It would shift fine but wouldn’t stop as if the torque converter was stuck. So I change the TQ and it didn’t fix it. I got under the truck and could hear the tranny rattling. I took off the oil pan and see that the transmission is shot. So I have a spare tranny in the shop out of a 1999 4runner so they were similar but had differences. I had to change the transfer case from the 2001 tranny into the 1999 tranny and I changed the valve body out of the 2001 where it has a electric throttle solenoid into the 1999 that had a cable for the throttle. Put it all together, the rattling went away but still going from park to any gear it just goes and pressing the break will stall the motor as itsstuck in gear. The tranny is good and a new TQ. So I’m thinking could it be the ECU or the solenoids?. Any advice will help. I'm thinking electric but Idk where to start. What sucks is I have a foot of snow out side and not beast to go play.

Mine did this a couple times and I found my issue to be a tear in the rubber boot that connects the airbox to the throttle body.

Installed a new boot and while it was disassembled cleaned the Mass Air sensor and it cleared up my issue.

No codes were stored by this issue, I assume the Mass Air sensor was fine and the issue was that excess air was getting into the TB after the sensor and causing the issue.

BTW - the factory part is way expensive...so I used this for replacement -
