Starts.....but doesn't

Hello-Got a call from my son who is 7 hours away from me so I will explain what he is telling me that his 1998 4Runner is doing. It's got about 65k on it.

The problem is when he tries to start it acts like it is going to start but just doesn't.
When he attempts to start it a second time it will start.
He did have to put a new battery in it recently and wonder if what is going on is related to his problem now?
Any thoughts on what this could be?
Thanks for responding!

Replace the starter contacts, that may be your problem.

My son had a 98 also and his fuel pump had a problem. It would start in the morning and get him to school and when it was time to leave the engine would turn over fine but would not start but after several tries it would start and get him home. Finally it would not start at all. After checking sensors and relays we found that it was the fuel pump.

This reminds me I need to replace something... lol

If you turn the key ad you hear a "click" then it is definitely the starter or the contacts. With that low mileage I'd bet it's the contacts. There's a bunch of threads about this. I doubt the fuel pump would be bad at only 65k.

Id start with checking the connections to the battery. Lose connections on the terminals could cause your symptoms. And if hejust hsd it replaced maybe they didnt get tightened down enough
