I’ve been running one for years. The first one I got has a small control panel that has a timer on it, runs for 45 min at a time. Now that I have a dual battery I prefer the one that just stays on.

It only uses <5 amps, which is about what an ARB fridge uses at max load. Even running without a dual battery for 8 hours (40ah consumed), you should still have enough to turn the car over the next morning, but without a dual battery I would recommend the one with a timer.

All of these are great , but the real question is has anybody come up with anything when it's time to you know take a (p) ? Man now that would be a real good investment :wow2::vader::mmph:nothing worse than climbing out too :yawn:

There's a couple rubber plugs under the carpet in the cargo. I suppose you could set up a funnel and some tubing.

I tried sleeping in the back of my 4runner in 20 degrees a month and a half ago. It was cold but I think survivable, but I ended up not lasting the night because I didn't want to sit there for 13 hours in the darkness. So for me it's not the cold it's more how long I have to sit there doing nothing.

Yeah I may try that. Normally I probably will just not go out in cold weather instead, I only did it because I was itching to get my new to me 4runner out in the wilderness somewhere.

I’ve heard people use a Buddy Heater in a T4R, sleep system in the back and it could work.

Even if you don’t have a sleep platform, you could put the heater in there. The Reflectix comment has given me some ideas as well. Last time I slept in my T4R it was 24 degrees the first night of the trip. I need a warmer solution.

I only sleep in the back of the 4runner when I'm solo without my son. So twice in the last year. haha. My Fridge puts out quite a bit of heat when it's cycling and I'm pretty sure that contributed to me being too hot when it dropped down to the low 40s on one trip last year with a 30 degree bag. I was stripped down to my boxers and a wife beater and I was still hot.

Actually, that was my old fridge on the 40 degree trip. There was something wrong with it that made it constantly cycle so yeah it put out a ton of heat and kept me warm all night. Even with the windows cracked and rain falling at night.

Since I can't start a new thread:

Is winter car camping feasible in the northern Rockies? I'm moving to central Colorado for the winter and want to take a road trip to Banff via Steamboat, Jackson, and Big Sky, and possibly extend the road trip to Whistler, Tahoe, and Park City. Is it even worth trying to car camp or is that a waste of effort & money on gear because it's simply too cold?

I've looked at sleeping platform threads but would probably just buy a cot and -20 rated sleeping bag. Mainly looking to save money on lodging in expensive ski towns. I have a 2010 4wd.

Pls read the thread. There are answers to your questions above.
Another answer, yes, a good sleeping bag is better, simpler, and safer than gas or electric heaters where you want to be self-sufficient.

All I have to say is that I regularly sleep in back when out skiing, coldest I've been out was around 0 degrees F. Its really not that bad, just like regular cold camping. A good insulated mat and a sleeping bag rated for what you're going to expect. Reach out in the morning and start the truck, crank the heat. If 10 mins you can get out of your sleeping back and not freeze!

A comforter helps if you need to add 20 more degrees to your sleeping bag too!
