Stealership recommendations

The dealership is trying to get me to have some work done. Seems a little fishy to me. Anybody know what these services are? Can I do them myself?
1. Vent service- $80
2. PCV Valve- $40
3. Air Induction- $185

4. Cabin Filter- $62 ( I did this myself for $15. So it makes me feel like they are ripping me on all the other stuff too)

Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.

I think it's a well known fact that the dealerships have higher prices in general... That being said, if you're reasonably handy, you could do most everything on your vehicle maintenance wise. (not having some specialized tools might stop you though) I'd shop around to some other smaller shops if you feel like you can't do those services yourself. Good luck!

Definitely inquire as to what the "vent service" is, before I read the rest of your post my first thought was that it was simply changing the cabin air filter. Guess not, but still sounds quite simple (if they even do anything at all!).

1. Vent service- $80 Only thing I can think of is cleaning out your HVAC vents...why?

2. PCV Valve- $40 Haven't done this on the 4R, but based on past experience with other vehicles this shouldn't be difficult. Not sure what part of the $40 is parts, but surely could be done cheaper. Why do they say it needs to be done?

3. Air Induction- $185 Cleaning the MAF sensor maybe???Again, question "why?"

4. Cabin Filter- $62 ( I did this myself for $15. So it makes me feel like they are ripping me on all the other stuff too)
Don't blame you one bit...it ticked me off when I was going in for my free oil changes (after purchasing the 4R new) to hear the service advisors come into the waiting area and tell the other customers they recommended changing the air and cabin filters for $100 total. Usually the "victims" were women and seniors. I feel bad that those who can probably least afford it are the ones taken in, and that they probably have nobody else willing or able to help them with their car. Of course, one older couple, looking pretty well-abled, I mentioned it to out in the lot said they had the money and didn't want the hassle...they didn't really care. To each their own. They tried it on me and I just reached under the chair and showed them the parts.


Even before you go through the trouble personally, find out why they think it needs to be done, and have them show you any problems they've discovered.

1. Vent service- $80 (Wow, they charge you 80$ to play with your A/C system, and check all of the doors and air temperature mixture door movements....)

2. PCV Valve- $40 (If it aint broke, clean it or dont fix it)

3. Air Induction- $185 (HOLY F*** RIP OFF! They want 185 to seafoam your f****** 4Runner?!!? And clean the MAF?)

4. Cabin Filter- $62 .....I will say nothing......

Ok, here is what you do....

1. Vent service- $80 Skip this as it doesn't exist....:wtf:

2. PCV Valve- $40 Pull PCV Valve...clean with spray gumout...reinstall. $5


3. Air Induction- $185 Put 2 cans of seafoam though the intake or simply use 2 cans of throttle body cleaner if you open it up then add a 3rd can of seafoam to a full tank of gas. Disconnect MAF and remove...clean with CRC MAF sensor cleaner then reinstall. Cost for both: $36

So you have $41 worth of work to do.
