steering box ? new to forum

hey all,
i'm posting here and in the classic t4r section too.

i have a 91 auto v6 and in need of a new steering box, or so my old mechanic says back in tx. i'm wanting to hit up a pick and pull but i've never been. anything i should look for, take with me (tools), expect to pay? what all do i need to actually get?

so after some research, i found Jim's Used Toyota Truck Parts here in denver and he has lots of steering boxes for $75 each. i asked my local mechanic how much a new steering box runs--$1800 list! and about $350 for the rebuild.

so now a couple questions:

how do i tell a used steering box is worthy of purchasing for the installation?

should i just avoid the used one and have mine rebuilt?

For sure you want to be looking for leaks where the pitman arm (steering arm) comes out of the gear box. Also, if possible, you want to look for too much free play. This is easiest when the box is still on the vehicle. Turn the key on, grab the steering wheel and turn it side to side. If it has a lot of travel, more than 3 inches or so of side to side travel, avoid it. I'm not sure about Toyotas but most manufacturers put a set screw on the gearbox to adjust gear lash. However, if you are not familiar with setting these, I wouldn't recommend doing so.
