stiff shifting

I recently bought a '96 sr5 5 speed with 150k miles on it. I've noticed that when shifting into 1st gear after coming to a stop at a stop sign or trafffic light, I have to put quite a bit of pressure on the gear shift to get into gear. Sometimes it won't go into gear at all, in which case I let the clutch back out, then put it in again. After double-clutching, it goes into gear. Is this a common occurence with the 4runners, or does my tranny need some attention? Is there a resevoir for gear oil on these? Do the synchros need replacement?

Where in the pedal stroke does your clutch engage? If it's when it's just coming off the floor, I'd suspect the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

Carefully bleed the clutch (yeah, it's a PITA) and see if it helps. There should be an adjustment trunnion in the pedal linkage which will allow you to set it up so it engages near the top of the pedal stroke with about 3/4" of free play at the top of the pedal stroke to insure that it's engaging fully.

Good luck.
