Storage Box Mod

Just repaced the factory sliding cargo tray with a custom made Tuffy Security Products storage box.

The Rubbermaid ActionPacker I had back there previously was sliding around even with tie downs, rubbing the interior surfaces raw. Plus I was worried about it popping open in an accident -- having heavy steel extraction equipment and other stuff flying around the cabin.

The box was obscenely :wow2: expensive, but many of the decent, made-to-stock steel storage boxes out there are expensive and don't come in a variety of sizes. I figured if I was going pay top price, I'd get one that fit perfectly, maximizing the usable space.

~$1,500, which included the carpet liner, the vinyl diamond plate on top, and LTL shipping.

I looked at these too and I think they are (Fat Dave, please correct me if I am wrong) but they are around $1500 bananas.
Great quality, one of my buddies at the range has one in his Tahoe, ball bearing rollers, quality welds and tight as a nut.

Yup, Antman. But, the price is not too different than other mods -- superchargers, tires/wheels, lift kits, full skids, CAIs, LED light bars, ARB bumpers...

That's a nice alternative to a modular setup like I have (ARB Outback Drawers). They all have pluses and minuses, but all are pricey...worth it though if you're like me and want your stuff organized and secured.

How thick was the plywood that you used? I'm planning on removing the cargo tray when I get my TE and was planning on putting plywood down instead, most likely with a cargo liner. Yours looks great even without the storage unit. I need the space for my dog and don't want him to have to jump too high.

Nice! I guess you had to lose the sliding cargo tray.

I removed the cargo tray and floor, drilled through the floor, and mounted the drawers with the ARB-provided backing plates bolted through the floor. Rock solid. Obviously measured like 5 times and test fitted everything, and made sure there wasn't anything critical under the floor before drilling.

By looking, it doesn't seem as if it was going to slide around without you bolting it down? Is that accurate? Did you bolt it down for security reasons? Thanks. Looks great.

It's a strong, secure storage option for sure! Bit too expensive for my empty wallet. For $100 I put this together with left over plywood and screws. Had to buy the new turnbuckles, hooks, latches, and cheap carpet. Then of course you HAVE to use a 12 pack to release your inner carpenter skills.

It's crude, but it works.

The drawers are heavy and are unlikely to slide around much, but there are several good reasons to have them bolted down, or secured down in some other way:
-the risk would be in an accident or rollover that a 150+ lb loaded drawer system becomes a projectile
-when you open the drawers or slide the fridge out without the drawer frames secured you risk the entire thing sliding out of the back of the truck with the lever force
-minimize rattling
-satisfaction of knowing you did it right

What size are the boxes? I looked at their site and they do not have anything specific to the 5th gen 4runner?
