I have been working on this for the past couple weekends, as time permits. Today I was able to get some finish on it, 3 coats of polyacrylic, to get it about 90% complete. My inspiration came from here. I did not modify the design to much other than to raise the drawer height to 9.5". Ultimately the sleeping area will be for the kids so I can go back to using a hammock. I also choose to not have a hatch for the cubby area, rather permit access through the rear when the seats are down. Everything in that area are item I do not use on a regular basis, but need in the vehicle... Recovery gear, shovel, come-a-long, jumper cables and toilet paper.
This was my first major wood working project. I'm more of a metal worker so I am quite pleased with how it turned out. Yeah I had a few mismeasurements along the way, and Gorilla Glue is quite strong... But it serves the purpose well.
You may ask why the drawers are not flush with the front..... Originally they were. Initially I ordered slides with delrin rollers and when I received them and got them installed, I was not all that pleased with the quality. With these installed the drawers closed flush with the top and sides. So I ordered some BB slides, I installed those and they cause the drawers to stick out 1/2". Same length slides, but no big deal. I can live with it. The self closing feature is nice as it doubles as a lock to keep the drawers closed.
Also, all cuts were made using a circular saw with a Kreg Rip Guide and all dadoes were done using a handheld router and edge guide.
I am going to add some quick fists to the cubby area to secure my shovel and come-a-long handle.
