Strange vibrations over 80mph....

Hi gang!

My trusty 2004 SR5 (147k miles) has developed a vibration, as if perhaps something is flapping in the wind. At first I only noticed it above 90mph, but now it's as low as 80mph, too. A quick peek under the car doesn't show anything obviously loose.

Any ideas before I take it to a new shop in a new city?

Also- anyone got a favorite shop near San Mateo, CA for older 4runners?

Soon she'll be ready for a new tranny, and I'm not sure how worthwhile an investment that'll be for a weekend hauler.

It’s your truck telling you not to drive so fuxking fast. Slow down for chrissake.

Unless you’re a dickhead that enjoys endangering others’ lives. In that case, slow the fuxk down.

There are 6 states, 7 if you include a small portion of Texas that has 80 MPH speed limits on certian highways, that being said California is not one of them, so I agree slow down!!

I'm having same issue w my 07 4runner; did you figure out what it was? Only happens at high speed, sounds like loose roof rack but everything on top is tight. 345K so might be wheel bearing.

The OP you quoted hasn't been back on the forum since his last post in this topic, well over 3 1/2 years ago, he's not going to answer your question.

The best advice you going to get is the same advice given to him....SLOW DOWN and do the speed limit or slightly over at best!

Mine starts to get really sketchy above 80. Feels like the front end is free, and that something's shaking around up there. I am 99% sure it's my old rotted Bias Ply tires interacting with the road. My old sagging suspension doesn't help much either.

Do you physically feel the vibration in the car? I too thought mine has a vibration-like sound above 80 but when I placed a plastic water bottle it seems to have no physical vibration at all, just wind noise. At this point I'm convinced it's just bad aero. Don't forget you have an airduct right under first factory skid plate to duct air onto oil pan, I don't know why but that might cause some turbulance at high speed.
