Ok so fun night Monday night. My wife and I were getting ready for bed around 9:45pm when we hear a scream out front. A few seconds later we hear a car peel out.
I go for the gun, just in case, and then I see flashlights in our back yard.
Someone bangs on the back door, and we hear someone yell, "Police!". I go for the door and there are 3 officers there at our back door. One holds a badge up and we open the door. He asks if we heard anything and we directed them to the scream and squealing wheels out front. I point them to the gate leading from the back yard to the front and we find that it's been torn down, most likely by the perpetrators.
I also see that a few weak boards in the back fence that I'd been meaning to replace had been broken in. The lot behind our house is a protected green belt, so a lot of trees. One of the reasons we bought the house, actually.
So we're looking through the windows at the police talking to a neighbor across the street and listening to the police scanner app on our phones and reading some basic police report gossip on Facebook on what the hell is going on and we piece together the story.
4 people were apprehended while robbing a Jack-in-the-Box down the road. (totally worth it, because they made out with $200 before being caught. Robbing at gunpoint too). The police think they have everyone, but somehow learned that there were 2 extra perps that had escaped into our neighborhood. They had been looking for hours, and tracked them to the greenbelt behind our house. The perps ran, busted through our back fence, busted through the gate, and went for the neighbor across the street who just got out of her car getting home from a late shift. They forced her into the back seat as a hostage and started to drive away, but she popped the lock and escaped and ran back to her house. Luckily her mom heard the scream and had the door already unlocked and opened.
The mom gave chase in her car and chased the perps to the freeway, but they ditched the car, hopped a fence and disappeared into a shopping center. After firing at and hitting the mom's car.
Bit stupid in retrospect, but someone had tried to take her kid, and the cops weren't there yet. Super brave woman.

No-one was hurt, luckily, but I mean ****. What the hell is going on?
We specifically bought a house in this location due to the low crime rate. No point in having a house if you can't enjoy it and feel safe in it.
To make matters worse, my wife was on the front porch having a cig around 9:30. Which means that she was minutes away from being in the thick of it. The perps could have grabbed her instead (even though our cars are parked way up our long driveway, and not in the street like the neighbor's so they aren't 'getaway vehicle' fodder).
So I've been meaning to replace the fence as it wasn't in the greatest of condition, but shit. Now we're going with an 8ft fence with motion detecting security lights and at least a chirping motion sensor, if not a full blown ****ing alarm.
And, by the way, the neighbor's dogs did not help at all as they bark so much normally that we've just learned to tune them out. Super helpful.
I'm so glad that the neighbor's daughter is OK, as I'd feel responsible if she got hurt. They came from MY yard, broke through MY fence that I'd been putting off fixing. What's worse is that I disconnected our motion detecting flood light in the front yard last weekend because I was replacing some siding on the house and had not finished the job yet. I figured one week down would be OK, as we have a basic porch light for normal illumination. If the motion detector light had gone off as they ran through my front yard to her, she might have looked up faster and been in less danger.
