Turbo, high torque, diesel, manual transmission, 8” infotainment screen... All things I may never hear associated with a 4Runner!

Not that I would give up my T4R, but this thing appears to be pretty bad @$$.

[MENTION=166962]4RN4FUN[/MENTION] If you don't drive a lot, I would agree. The majority of the pluses that the JL offers would seem to be problematic over the long haul.

It's OK. Even the Jeep people will hate it (until the next new Wrangler update comes out, then they'll accept/love it). I know, because I bought a '17... the last of the REAL Wranglers before they ruined them with aerodynamics and more creature comforts for the soccer moms. :laugh:

Don't worry, still have the 4R too!

My ex boss had a Wranger and I want to say that it was a '16-'17 Unlimited. I was surprised by how basic it is for the price. It's definitely an off-road beast though.

Real Jeep people say that Wranglers aren't real Jeeps.

Eh. My 4Runner may not have the extreme rock climbing ability of that Jeep, but it's plenty capable for my off-road needs. Plus it has more cargo space and better use of the entire vehicle's "footprint". And I bet my 4Runner is a lot quieter inside, and more comfortable, than the Jeep.
 
My brother in law has a friend with 2 Wranglers. Every so often I wind up riding in one. I hate them most uncomfortable vehicle I have ever been in. Narrow seats and the seats also bother my back. Ill never own one. the 8” screen does nothing for me but I also think heated seats are a unnecessary extravagance if you live south of Edmonton so that’s just simple ol me.

Diesel, manual transmission, turbos I’m all for those things

Mine is a 2dr. Manual windows. Manual locks. No rear camera. No navigation. Soft top (hard top from factory, put the soft top on after). I got it about as basic as I could on the interior.

They are fun, as long as you're below interstate speeds - they can still be a handful with a cross/head wind at speed.
 
I was mildly excited when I first heard it was getting a turbocharged engine and that enthusiasm vanished when I watched the video and heard it's an Alfa based engine. Just what I always wanted...a vehicle that will take me into the middle of nowhere and then breakdown.
 
To be fair, Wranglers have excellent resale value, easily rivaling 4runner in that department. Their reliability has been decent too. Obviously, this JL will have teething issues, as is the case with any 1st year model. Honestly, the ONLY thing i am disappointed at is the lack of side airbags for the rear bench...hey, i have a family!

But, there is no denying that Jeep did an AMAZING job with the JL, esp the Rubicon models. It pretty much improved the JK in every possible way...more creature comfort that was desperately lacking, took off-roading to the next level (e.g. factory lift, fenders allowing for bigger tires, etc.), stronger D44 axles, and every little details that enhance the experience (adjustable brake light to accommodate bigger spare!).

All business. Sounds like it gets the job done. The Wrangler is able to pull off manual windows, locks, etc. Throw that setup on the 4R and it would look so out of place!

People have said that of the JKU. Fiat has to make money some how. The company wouldn't be in business if only "enthusiasts" bought Wranglers...

I am excited about the updates to the Wrangler simply because it will force Toyota's hand. The Wrangler is making aggressive moves to become more fuel efficient, adding a diesel and a hybrid. So if the Wrangler, the bulliest of the bulliest of the dedicated off-roaders (minus the Raptor) has a diesel and a hybrid, the 4runner will have to. The 4runner at least tries to pretend it's a family SUV that can mascarade as an offroader. If they want to compete, they will HAVE to follow.

I am impressed with the Wrangler and would love one. But the reliability is laughable. My friend is on his third engine in under 100k miles. Let's not get started with the leaking, overheating transmission and electronics. That's a major part of why I am posting on t4r, not a wrangler forum.

So true. If I recall correctly, since they added two more doors and power features, they've been selling more units than ever before - by a big margin.

The 4 doors aren't for me (4Runner fits that bill better, IMO) but if they make Jeep the money they need to keep 2door Wranglers on the road, then so be it!

Absolutely. I test drove both the JKU (2016 Sport) and Grand Cherokee (2015 Limited) before buying the 4Runner. The 4Runner is the balance that I was looking for plus the reliability that the others couldn't offer. I've always been a fan of the JKU/JLU because of the 4 doors and its no surprise Jeep/Fiat has impressive sales.

By the numbers, it looks like the upgraded engine that fixed MPG made the difference. Jeep Wrangler US car sales figures Of course, you can argue recession, but since the 2011 redesign they've blown up. In my honest opinion, 2007 to 2010 are absolute garbage. Post-2011 Wranglers are a decent vehicle.

Force Toyota to follow? You mean like DRUM freaking brakes on the Tacoma?!!! Or how about not having Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?!! All done to save a few pennies or to add to their large stash of cash! Screw the customers!

I love Toyota but their recent shits are just annoying!

My 2008 Sienna with the 3.5L V6 blew connecting rods at 85,000 miles. $4500 later and it started to leak oil on my garage floor...granted, the oil leak is probably Toyota mechanic error, but screw that! I sold it. Unfortunately, there was not a better choice out there and we needed one right away...so, we got 2017 Sienna. But, my once rosy picture of Toyota quality has a dent in it...so does my wallet.
